Curious to know what people think of the latest 'designer' baby story. The parents who went to America to have geneically matched baby to help their 4 year old son. I have to admit before I had my two DS I would have been one of those people who are against it but now I wholheartedly support the parents as I would do anything to save my child. In fact until this story we were going to have a permenant solution to contraception but have decided against it now as you never know what will happen to your family in the future - morbid I know but thats being a mummy!

bundle, furball, I also tried to donate cordblood, but my hospital said that they didn't do it because it was an administrative hassle! they have to type, label and freeze the samples within a limited time, and then arrange for collection, but this was too much hassle for a major london teaching hospital! shame.

when i was pregnant i was given a flier for a service that preserves your baby's cordblood for you for about 20 years. it cost nearly £1000, which seems very steep for a remote 'what if?' but would of course be worth every penny if it was needed. it was too much for us, though. i wonder, does it really cost so much, or are they riding to the bank on people's fears?

my friend who had hers harvested said it was pricey, so that sounds about right. it's really not worth it unless you have a particular problem in mind like my friend, although like you say I'm sure they prey on people's fears & get them to store it. the procedure is risky anyway - I think you need to have chemo first.

I don't want to reopen a thread that has reached its end, but just wanted to apologise for posting a strong opinion and then not being around to follow up on it, I wasn't expecting to be offline for a few days
