Shopkeeper dies following gang attack

here

Posting because as soon as I saw the headline I immediately thought the shopkeeper in question would probably be a middle-aged Asian man and it would be a stupid racist incident involving hardly any actual theft of goods from his shop. Clicked through and -- bingo

I just find it really sad that there have been and STILL are so many attacks almost exactly like this, that they have become this predictable. I mean honestly, if someone wrote a TV drama about a gang of youths attacking a middle-aged Asian shopkeeper for no reason at all, it would probably be rejected as too predictable.

Poor man, poor family.

Yes it is total horror.

It makes no sense, why did the attacker do this? What was the point? Why did he feel the need?

My sympathies are with his family.

ilovesprouts · 22/02/2010 09:13

so sad .its not so far from where i live hope they get the scum bags

DorotheaPlenticlew · 22/02/2010 09:16

I think it was something to do with them having tried to nick cigarettes or money from his shop on an earlier occasion; maybe he told them off and they were going back in a group to "show him" or something

It sounds as if at least some of them were seen and might be identifiable.

Actually, just looked at article again and apparently it is an area with lots of drug problems, so maybe they just targeted him because he was older and seemd like an easy target, rather than it being a racial incident as I first thought.

Still horrible.

My late father used to have a corner shop. He was not asian but obviously looked "foreign".

You are really vulnerable when you work all hours in a shop by yourself. We were always worried about him especially when you hear stories like this. He often had trouble with youths (and that was in a "posh" area). I don't think it was because he was obviously not British - I just think there are some really horrible people out there.

So don't assume that this is racist - unless there is specific evidence to show this (sorry have not read article so I don't know if this is the case).

mayorquimby · 22/02/2010 11:12

it's a horrible crime but how do you know it was racially motivated?it doesn't even say what race the attackers were.

onagar · 22/02/2010 11:42

what mayorquimby said. People are too quick to assume these things and then you have figures that appear to show 1000s of racially motivated crimes.

Whatever color the attackers were I'd like to see them punished severely, but these days there's not much hope of that.

daftpunk · 22/02/2010 11:52

Op;

Can you tell me why you have described this awful crime as a "racist attack" when you don't even know what colour the killers are..?

And even if the killers are white, doesn't mean it was racially motivated...

I think you should consider getting this thread deleted...

DorotheaPlenticlew · 22/02/2010 11:53

Yes, in my later post I acknowledged I don't know it was racially motivated, so you are right topull me up but I still feel it is something that seems to happen a lot and frequently there is an element of racial tension.

I just felt a bit depressed that the obvious cliche that jumped into my mind before I even had time to click turned out to be at least partly accurate, I guess.

Daftpunk why do you think it needs deleted? I made an assumption, then corrected myself before anyone pointed it out, then said again I was wrong to assume ... I would hope it is clear that there was no malicious intent to the thread, it's more that the headline seemed to match a pattern that seemed sadly familiar.

So sad did you see his poor family on the news.Attacks like these are common unfortunately but don't always end like this thank god .The shop keeper in the corner shop local to me at uni was constantly abused even though his long opening hours kept the very people doing it in alcohol and cigarettes!
