John Terry sacked as England Captain

I am really pleased Fabio has sacked him and a bit surprised to be honest as I thought he wouldn't when he said he would make his decision based on what was best for the team.

I really hope his wife kicks him out as well.

ILT I'd suggest that Barry doesn't have the requisite stature as a footballer to lead his country and he's never won anything of any signifigance in football,is a relatively new memebr to the English squad and does not play at a high enough standard of club football. Rio on the other hand has captained his club on many occassions,is an automatic starter for England when fit,has played at the very highest level of the game for the guts of a decade now and has won multiple major honours. Not every captain has to be a blood and guts screaming type and I think in the modern game such qualities are a thing of the past and are realy just lip-service to passion.

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2010 15:36

mayorquimby....Barry is his own teams captain also, thought he'd played for england for a good few years? but really,i was suggesting him as he doesnt have a colourful past! thats main reason really

terry says he hopes to be back as captain by world cup,can you see that happening??

mayorquimby · 07/02/2010 15:36

Well he didn't punch him for a start. But it does happen in football regularly enough for it not to be a shocking incident and it is the first time I can remember Ferdinand having done something like this. Who would be your choice for captain out of interest?

foxinsocks · 07/02/2010 15:42

he clouted him! it may not have been a punch with his fist but he hit him in the head basically.

all I'm saying, you lot want to judge on morality, then Rio is no second choice imo. His fitness/form has not even been that good, ignoring the issue of who makes a good captain. You have to choose someone on form/in fitness too I reckon.

I don't like Gerard but would rather have given the captaincy to him or Lampard tbh.

Then again, I wouldn't have sacked Terry (though not sure Capello was left with much choice).

mayorquimby · 07/02/2010 15:43

Yes he's captained Villa for many years as well. He's been involved in the England team for many years but until recently was never a regular starter or important player. He has been one under Capello but I think there'd be at least 5 players who'd be ahead of him in line to captain England.

bubbles4 · 07/02/2010 15:45

Gareth Barry was the captain when he was at Aston Villa but as an England player he is not an automatic choice so that would count against him being England captain.
As for Rio,he has captained his club to Premiership and Champions League titles.

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2010 15:49

well maybe we need a change...a new face

all i know of Terry is that he was excellent with my dd when she was chelsea mascot last year, she went in dressing room before the game to meet them all (pics on profile)and he stopped what he was doing and made a big fuss of her,and took time to show her round, introduce the players etc. lampard was great too. it was a lovely day

but, back to captaincy, would we have terry back if it meant we had better chance of getting near that cup?? i think maybe so

i also have the feeling that he will now be kept behind the scenes and be re-installed as captain by june.

mayorquimby · 07/02/2010 15:49

I'm not making moral decisions. I wouldn't have taken Terry as captain becausae his best years are well behind him and his positioning and pace are a liability at times.
The only reason I'd agree with the decision to take the captaincy from him due to his affair is because the affair affected another member of the squad and as such could lead to divisions within the squad, disrupting the dressing room and possibly over-shadow the teams preperation for the tournament. This has nothing to do with morals, just being practical, and if he had 50 affiars but none of them had affected a team-mate I don't think anyone would have even raised the question of taking the captaincy from him. No one would have given a toss.

foxinsocks · 07/02/2010 15:55

oh I think it would. Because there's nothing more the British public and press likes (it seems) than this sort of scandal. Bridge wasn't even seeing his ex when Terry was shagging her.

and Rio has hardly played this season (from memory, I'm not a Manu supporter but can barely remember seeing him play) - he's older than Terry and is long past his best.

foxinsocks · 07/02/2010 15:56

I'm not really that bothered - I think it's a real shame that we have to make decisions for non sport reasons in sport and it seems to be something particular to this country.

bubbles4 · 07/02/2010 16:01

Whilst Rio hasnt played as much this season due to injury,he is still a world class defender and an automatic choice both for England and Manchester United.

foxinsocks · 07/02/2010 16:08

How can you be an automatic choice when you haven't been playing?

I'm trying to put my thinking cap on but I don't think Rio has played more than twice since Manu lost to pool in that game in October! How can someone like that be an automatic choice?

Nancy66 · 07/02/2010 16:24

Rio is currently suspended because of violent conduct!

i can't think of anyone suitable to be the captain. They're all low life thugs.

The captain has to be someone that is pretty much guaranteed to be on the pitch and offered a starting place in the team - which rules a lot of them out.

Owen would have been good but his form is too unpredictable.

L**d and c*e also shagged the French floozy so they won't be in with a shout either.

So, why is it OK for JT to captain Chelsea, but not England

BitOfFun · 07/02/2010 16:38

Nancy- is that going to come out too, or will the Cheryl publicity machine bury it?

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2010 16:39

WB no longer plays for chelsea

Nancy66 · 07/02/2010 16:51

BitofFun - i'm not sure if it will. Because unless either of the players mentioned corroborate it (which they won't of course!) then I think the papers won't risk it.

Leningrand - WB had split up with VP and he's certainly no innocent party. He used to lend JT his house to shag all his other women in. I find it rather amusing that one of the other women turned out to be WB's missus.

Highlander · 07/02/2010 17:05

bleugh, why would any woman lower herself by shagging a footballer

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2010 17:20

well highlander,i just canr imagine!!

wannaBe · 07/02/2010 17:25

It wasnt just between him and his wife though,it involved a member of the team he was captaining," but the woman he shagged was no longer in a relationship with WB. Therefore, it has nothing to do with the team.

If JT wasn't married and had become involved with this woman would people still be saying he should lose the captaincy? Of course not.

lisbey · 07/02/2010 17:41

The decision was nothing to do with JT's unsuitability to be England captain. If it was you'd hardly appoint Rio to be guardian of the Nation's morals.

IMO it was done simply to take the pressure off (and therefore help) Terry, by avoiding him being the front man for England and having to take all the press conferences during the World Cup. Capello's done him a favour.

Oblomov · 07/02/2010 18:22

Lisbey is way off the mark as to why JT lost his captainacy.
I have insiders info, originating from the very top influential people in football,(that most people really 'in the know' of the football world, everyone knows about JT, A Cole and loads of others, all up to naughty business) that FCapello told JT nearly 3 days before it was reported.
Also, insiders info that there is alot alot ALOT more to come out about JT.
The main thing, when my dh told me made me feel quite sick. THAT BAD.
Tabloids love all this. IT WILL COME OUT, only q is when/how soon.

GypsyMoth · 07/02/2010 19:14

Oblombov..... Would that be the fraud allegations??
