i'm confused. are you olkn, mumcentreplus?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/02/2010 21:34

I'm not "invested" in this in any personal way; but I have done a lot of reading on the topic recently (the subject crops upon MN from time to time, after all) and it seems odd to me that (while I do understand that there are women who are prostituted against their will) we ignore the voices of women who say they are happy working, while listening with open-eyed horror to those who are not. It seems inequitable to me - and there are undoubtedly are women who are happy (or at any rate not feeling daily raped) working, and as far as I can see they are actually in the majority. (The ScotPep stats I gave earlier - fewer than 100 streetworkers in Edinburgh, nearly 300 brothel workers, plus agency call-girls, plus agency "flats", plus women working independently...)

And I wonder why radfems want to deny these women their voices.

That's all.

AnyFucker · 09/02/2010 21:37

thanks for answering my question, olkn

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/02/2010 21:38

so do you have boy children, will you be telling them that it's fine by you for them to use prostitutes? (happy ones, of course).

and of the three hundred edinburgh brothel workers, have you any stats as to those who are drug addicted and were abused as children?

Mumcentreplus · 09/02/2010 21:39

personally I think its more comparable to a taxi..you rent a car from a firm..and you have to make a certain amount each week to hire the car...but the ride is your vagina or mouth/arse..not a car...

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/02/2010 21:39

mumcentreplus, yes, that's true, she can go home when she pleases.

No, we're not the same person, though mumcentreplus was quoting from a post of mine.

oh but NO, that's just not true. she cannot go home until she's at least covered her rent for the night, which is not a few quid, it's a substantial amount of money, usually over fifty per cent of earnings, charged up front. and if she's not using the room enough it goes to someone else, because time is money. she can gossip all she likes, but if she's late to the line-up she's fined. it's just ludicrous, this cutesy self-employment that you have imagined here.

no [email protected] was being a pia!..you know...sarcastic!..

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/02/2010 21:47

Aitch, what my boy children (young adults already) choose to do with their genitals, and with whom, is absolutely none of my business. And of course I don't have stats on the brothelworkers - do you, for those specific women? Given that, what is it, 25% of British women have been, or will be, sexually assaulted at some time, I'd guess at least 25% of them will also have been. (I may be wrong on the 25% thing, it's a number that popped into my head and I'm not sure where from.)

However, brothel keepers prefer workers who turn up when scheduled, so drug-addicted women, who tend to live chaotic lives, are not good brothel workers.

But the fact is, we cannot ever really know.

So why do we seem to prefer to believe that they're living in some kind of hell, when plenty of them don't seem to be?

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/02/2010 21:48

yy, i didn't understand, no quotes. apols.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/02/2010 21:50

nice try, olkn. did you teach the young adult males in your house that it's okay by you if they buy women?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/02/2010 21:53

Aitch, as I understand it, the prostitute pays per punter; no punters, she owes nothing - but of course, if she took to leaving early or whatever, there will be someone more willing to work. That's fine, no-one is forcing her.

Most brothels don't run a minimum daily rental, though if she's agreed with another prostitute to rent a flat for the day (so they're brothel-keeping/pimping each other) obviously she has to fulfill that agreement.

But again, no-one is forcing her.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/02/2010 21:55

that is emphatically not my understanding of it, from my friend, as i say.
where do you get your info from?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/02/2010 21:58

Aitch, I haven't really discussed prostitution with my boys - they both have long-term partners and the subject simply hasn't arisen. But in the (probably unlikely) event that they choose to discuss with me any future desire to see prostitutes, I'll pass on as much as I can about how to find a willing one.

If I had any control over what my sons do with their genitals, I wouldn't be a granny right now.

anyoldiron · 09/02/2010 21:59

I am a man and would NOT sign the petition because I do not think it would stop prostitution and there is a risk it would make the situation worse for those that work in the sex industry.

I have never used a prostitute or ever visted a lap dancing club or strip club or similar but used to work in a industry where it was commonplace for men who worked in the industry to entertain male clients by hiring prostitutes or hostesses for the evening, or going to lap dancing and strip clubs. The hostesses were highly paid but therein lies the problem - it was expected and accepted by all concerned.

There are many things that can cause harm to individuals and society such as drug taking, smoking, alcohol consumption, gambling, and prostitution. Unfortunately all those things are enjoyed by a significant minority or even majority of the population. Making these acivities illegal does not stop the demand or the supply - it just opens the door even wider for organised crime as we have seen with the drugs trade and the US alcohol prohibition era, back street gambling dens and strip clubs in 1950s London.

My head logically agrees with OldLady and scottishmummy. However, my heart is with Dittany and Aitch. Most of all I agree with AnyFucker - depressingly I DO NOT think there is a magic bullet solution but legalisation and strict regulation and far better legal protections for prostitutes (male and female) no average will improve working conditions and reduce violence.

A depressing thread indeed.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/02/2010 22:00

From a friend, Aitch, though I guess not the same one.

anyoldiron · 09/02/2010 22:02
