This story is a load of old baloney. We had one cup of tea with them once.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/01/2010 10:23

I hope they brought you some of their nice cakes, Justine!

BettyButterknife · 18/01/2010 10:26

What a shame it's not true! I'm a member of both and think combined campaigning could be really powerful.

Actually, why is this a daft idea? The combined might of both would pretty much cover all age groups of adult women and could be a formidable force.

fidelma · 18/01/2010 22:14

DH even knows about this. How ? was it in the telegraph?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 18/01/2010 22:16

Why? Do they wish to sort out our bloody language? Need some bum sex tips? Wish for us to educate them on the dangers of a fruitshoot?

amber1979 · 19/01/2010 16:22

Hey, don't knock the WI - they campaigned hard to get rape within marriage criminalised - which it wasn't until 1994, shockingly.

nighbynight · 19/01/2010 17:19

Cant we have an online WI branch on Mumsnet?

nickelbabe · 19/01/2010 17:21

i'm in the WI and i don't know if it would be a good match.
we don't swear in the WI.

BosomsByTheSea · 19/01/2010 20:48

I'd join the WI if there were Mumsnet types there

nickelbabe · 20/01/2010 10:24

Bosoms

men aren't allowed to join, so it would have to be a toys only night

BettyButterknife · 20/01/2010 11:31

You have to pick your branch wisely, but some are full of amazing women. Possibly more likely to be the urban ones (I suspect)...

Where are you, Bosoms? If you're anywhere near me you could join ours. I am president

FuriousGeorge · 20/01/2010 22:00

I was impressed when I saw the WI giving Blair a rough ride. However, our local one is more of the 'prettiest tea cup competition' variety,so after one visit,I never went back.I don't know why I was surprised really,as it is the same WI that my mum scandalised in the 1960's,by suggesting they have a different type of biscuit to have with their tea.Not exactly progressive.

BosomsByTheSea · 21/01/2010 07:05

Hi Betty

I'm in Cornwall. Very rural.

notagrannyyet · 21/01/2010 07:31

I have been to some meetings. Ours have some really interesting speakers. Even in rural areas it's not as 'twee' as some might think.

I don't go because I've too many other commitments at present. Also they were looking for a new secretary and as I'm on other committees......No No No! I'm looking to off load stuff not take more on.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 21/01/2010 07:36

Ok, which MNHQer let David Cameron touch her baby?

nickelbabe · 21/01/2010 11:44

we're not twee.
we have some interesting speakers and some deathly boring speakers.
but that's because we're democratic and try to please everybody at some point.

we're also highly active (we spearheaded the local campaign to save the Postbus: didn't work cos idiot in charge of the RM depot wanted to save money)

and we're very close to doing our own naked calendar (suggested and issue regularly raised by a number of really really old ladies!)

notagrannyyet · 21/01/2010 14:28

Will you be needing some large buns nickelbabe?

nickelbabe · 21/01/2010 16:43

not me! i could manage with a couple of raisins to cover my boobs!

horseyrider · 21/01/2010 21:08

I'm a WI member and it was this news that got me to join Mumsnet!

nickelbabe · 22/01/2010 11:10

welcome horseyrider!
