Haha that's going to bite them on the arse when they start applying for jobs...

mayorquimby · 14/01/2010 11:54

ffs it's just a group of students doing what students do. getting hammered and making inappropriate jokes.
Absolute storm in a tea cup.

I personally think there is something very wrong if anyone thinks that hitler and the holocaust is something to laugh and joke about. I think that there should be some things - and the murder of millions of people is one of them - that should never be transformed into a funny drinking game and a good laugh.

well, obviously a group is in really bad taste,, but the reality is that people have always played games that are in bad taste. The only difference here is that they're making it more public by putting it up on facebook.

It's not really newsworthy because it has surely always been done..

And that's fair enough, that's your threshold but millions of people find comedy in tragedy and have a dark sense of humour. For others it's not even that dark because they are so far removed and as such tragedy + time&distance = comedy. My point is that these were a group of teenagers doing something they found funny in their own house and stupidly put it up on facebook for a laugh, I don't think that they deserve to be raked over the coals in the national press.
People find their humour in different places. Southpark is one of the most popular shows in the world and constantly pushes the boundaries and takes the piss out of tragic or sensitive areas. Monthy Python constantly took the piss out of the nazis and dedicated an entire film to a bleak time in human civilisation in which public crucifiction is played out for laughs.
I'd imagine that none of these people were in anyway affected by the holocaust and as such they are removed from it and can make ironic jokes about it. If it was a comedian making jokes about the holocaust (and many of them do) people would look for the context in what they were saying and whether or not they were being satircial (ricky gervais) or bigoted (Jim Davidson) and I think that these kids should be afforded the same criteria. In which case I'd honestly believe that this is not some attempt to propetuate white power aryian political agendas but merely something which was played out for shock value and ironic laughs.

One member suggested Bailey's liqueur should be mandatory, because: "The Holocaust concludes with necking a Jew's brain."

I don't understand that bit.

Generally I am for free speech. However, I find that if young people are so stupid and insensitive to see that this game is offensive then they deserve vilification in the national press.

I hope that the Uni plans a trip to Auschwitz so that these self proclaimed 'Führer' see the reality of life under Hitler.

But surely this proves that they are only doing this for shock value laughs and making it into an overly-cartoonish macabre parody of itself. They aren't saying things like "you have successfully convinced the working people of Germany that the Jews are inferior race who deserve death and have mobilised the German working class which will surely boost our economy and prove the vast superiority of our pure aryian heritage...drink 3 fingers of glenlivett" they are playing the game out as though the nazis are brain drinking zombies.

yuk, how disgusting.

mayor, that point is too fine a distinction...the world does not need this sort of crap. Its always been around but it doesnt need to oxygen of publicity from Facebook.
