i`ve just read in the paper about a 7 year old boy from kazakhstan who was carrying his twin brother in his belly ,for 7 years the foetus lived like a parasite attached to the boys blood vessels, the boy kept telling his mum that there was something moving inside him!!!

Oh, the poor, poor child. I hadn't heard about this but I went and looked it up and there are further details here

My oh my. I have just read the link. The poor boy. I hope he is young and innocent enough to get over this. I do hope the doctors were sensitive in telling him the news and I really hope he can't read yet, so he can't understand the words in the newspaper reports.

whymummy · 09/06/2003 23:17

tigermoth it says that the family are keeping it a secret from him as he would be to scared

I actually came across a situation like this when I was a student nurse. A girl I looked after had a chest X-ray which showed a tumour. When it was removed and examined at pathology, it was discovered that it had started out as a twin which her chest cavity developed around. That type of tumour is called a terratoma and it has teethand hair etc. Like the boy's story, it was not an actual living fetus. The girl recovered very well after her surgery and was quite a star whilst in hospital.

mears i also saw on television this woman in america that had a massive tumour in her stomach i cant remember how much it weighted but before the operation she couldnt lie on her back because it would have crushed her,the tumour also had hairs and teeth

whymummy I read it last night and I was absolutely amazed.

cos · 10/06/2003 13:11

Actually its not that unusual, i once saw a brain tumor that was a dead fossilised twin!

Rhubarb · 10/06/2003 13:54

Mears, the baby was apparently alive but attached to the boy's blood vessels so they couldn't save it.

cos · 10/06/2003 14:30

It was'nt alive as a foetus or baby , it was like a tumor feeding off his blood supply

pie · 10/06/2003 15:25

I read that the twin was the about the same size as a fetus at about 6 months gestation.

Anyone else think about the Aunt in My Big Fat Greek Wedding?

pie, I was wandering where I'd heard something like this recently - had forgotten about MBFGW! LOL!

I have a friend to whom this has happened to... she said it was not that rare...
