Tonight is twelfth night, traditionally it's the last night to take Christmas decs down!

OK it might not be in the news, but its topical.

Its a shame, they look so nice & welcoming as well

Isn't the 6th January the twelfth night?

Yes actually it is the 6th.

Got ours down last night (actually my wonderful DH did it all himself). I always hate the bare boringness when they first go.

I think there's some disagreement over 12th night. Tomorrow, the 6th, is the 12th Day but it's an ancient tradition that the new day starts when the sun sets and not when it rises.

So there's confusion over whether or not 12th night is the evening before the 12th Day or the evening after.

There was a similar issue over when the solstice was just before Christmas, a fair number of people turned up on the wrong day. I think it was something to do with the actual astrological event happening on one day but after sunset. So by the old standards the day of the solstice as the day after.

Confusing....

I always have to get mine down before I go back to work/the DDs go back to school, so they came down on Sunday. I was quite unreasonably sad about it, as we had a lovely holiday and I didn't want it to end, but there you go. Still finding needles in the living room carpet mind you

I wondered so I looked it up & found
This great explanation

Of course everyone has different views!

We better take ours down tonight I think, sigh.

That explanation makes a lot of sense.

Thinking of it some more a number of European Countries have their big Christmas celebration and meal on the evening of the 24th, I guess for the same reason.

I have half of them down,

will do everything but the lights on the tree before DH gets home tonight, he is a bit precious about "his" lights so he can do them himself.

Mine was down yesterday.

Its so bare it looks like half my furniture has been robbed! How come it never looks this much free from clutter in November?
