But I don't understand - why didn't she just fold her buggy?

I always get told by drivers I can't go on the bus because there is too many pushchairs! weather its raining or not I don't see why you would go to the papers about it?!

must be a slow news day .

theyoungvisiter · 10/11/2009 17:27

Oh FGS!!!! The Mail is reeeeeeeelly scraping the bottom of the barrel. FOLD THE PRAM you silly woman.

That happens all the time round our way. (North London too). Perhaps I should sell my traumatic story too [starts putting on red eye makeup for touching weepy picture]

herjazz · 10/11/2009 17:29

you'd have no hope of folding some of the huge buggy monstrosities out there. Specially whilst keeping an eye on a toddler

If frequenting buses in london - or anywhere else - I'd plump for some umbrella stroller type thing

Tis a tad selfish to assume there is space on buses for these monster chariots. Really spaces are provided for wheelchair users. Fair enough if wheelchair space is free but you shouldn't feel entitled to it, or be obstruct aisle with it

The driver sounds incredibly rude and unpleasant though

thedollshouse · 10/11/2009 17:32

This has happened to me many times even when the pushchair was folded.

Blu · 10/11/2009 17:35

Well, quite - and how big must her buggy have been to not have fitted in the space? Unless the buggy already there was a monster.
I never took a buggy on a bus without expecting that I might have to fold it for the sake of other passengers.

Blu · 10/11/2009 17:37

herJazz - I watched a wheelchair user see bus after bus disappear in the distance while he waited in vain: all the drivers said the space was already filled with buggies.

I don't know why the drivers didn't demand the buggy-owners fold their buggies so the wheelchair user could get on

BratleyBansBaubles · 10/11/2009 17:38

When we lived in central london I'd get on buses regularly with my bulky pram when DS was tiny, but, if there was already a pushchair on the bus I'd just wait for the next one. They were usually about 8-9 minutes apart.

The only thing this 'article' highlights is how downright rude some bus drivers can be!

Knickers0nMaHead · 10/11/2009 17:41

If im on the bus with the buggy and I see a wheelchair user at the bus stop, i get off the bus and wait for another one to come along. There is no way I could fold my buggy on a bus for a number of reasons, one being it is a phil n teds n it wouldnt fit in the luggage hold.

herjazz · 10/11/2009 17:43

I agree with you blu. As soon as a wheelchair user needed the spot they should fold and vacate or be offski

I would be furious if I couldn't get dd's wheelchair on cos of that. Mind you, I rarely get buses cos sadly that's about what I expect (and some buses our way have steps so can't get on anyway)

Saying that - I have got on with bloody horrendous phil and teds with baby and disabled dd in it. I did feel like I wanted a sign saying am not just a turd with a big buggy. She cannot walk

herjazz · 10/11/2009 17:44

haha knickers - phil and teds must be the only buggy that when you fold it makes no sodding difference to bulk and awkwardness of the thing

BratleyBansBaubles · 10/11/2009 17:47

I had to push my friends phil and ted one day, I almost took out whole shop displays aswell as a few pedestrians! Can't imagine even trying to get one on a bus!

Knickers0nMaHead · 10/11/2009 17:49

I cant wait until dd is out of pushchairs so then i can get a stroller for ds. I once got on a bus and ther were 7 buggies on altogether. Me in the designated buggy bit with another lady n buggy. two in the wheel chair bit and three folded up!

Knickers0nMaHead · 10/11/2009 17:51

bratley, it is much smaller than other doubles and i have found it to be the best out of a bad bunch for getting on buses.

Toffeepopple · 10/11/2009 17:54

Has happened to me loads too. The only time I got really upset was when we'd been waiting 45 minutes in the rain, it was a small umbrella fold pram, and the driver refused to let me on even if I folded it!

(And before anyone says it, I would usually fold it in anticipation after such a long wait as I knew it would be crowded, but DD was asleep in it and I had DH for an extra pair of hands so I took the risk thinking I could fold it by the luggage bay while he proceeded with the children).

Our local buses clearly state that there is room for two buggies unless needed by a wheelchair. Have actually never seen a wheelchair on the bus.

Indith · 10/11/2009 17:55

My bus is always busy for buggies. It is great if you can be on without folding but if not, tough, fold it! Wheelchairs of course should always have priority. I have folded a P&T on the bus before (while wondering why on earth the woman with a little stroller containing a toddler who was travelling with a childless friend didn't offer!) but mostly I try to take a sling and a Maclaren. FFS you can't complain, it isn't a right and buses have legal limits. I find it odd how people just don't think of folding, the other day I was on the bus in the buggy bay and a woman saw she couldn't get on so got her phone out and started telling her mate she would be late. Fold you stupid woman! It was nearly my stop so I got off and walked.

I think not wanting to take a phil and ted on a bus has more to do with me hating living in central london with one child nevermind 2!

I don't mind P&T's TBH, with a bit of practice I think I might be less of a liability!

Also, the woman in the article, surely it would be more dangerous for her son if he was in a buggy in the middle of the aisle? What if the bus had to stop suddenly?
More dangerous than in the wheelchair/buggy bays?

toddlerama · 10/11/2009 18:01

Why don't people use a sling for public transport? Realise that this tricky with 2, but a small umbrella fold and a sling has got to be preferable to taking a double on the bus?? Having said that, we live a very geographically challenged life at the moment with no car and me not being able to face the bus with my 2. If we can't walk, we don't generally go, so I have no business n a bus thread. As you were...

theanarchistarcheopteryx · 10/11/2009 18:10

How is this news?? Surely it happens every day somewhere or other.

theanarchistarcheopteryx · 10/11/2009 18:12

And OMG, walking?? In the rain?? Is this someone who's so used to driving everywhere that she assumes she'll dissolve in the rain?

herjazz · 10/11/2009 18:14

Agree knickers. I would not even dream of using public transport with my vicki pollard (which is my chariot of need now when out the 2 on my tod - fatboy ds flattens the tyres when he is underneath PandT's now and dd hates being relegated to the baby seat!)

SofaQueen · 10/11/2009 18:14

Happened to me all the time too. Got fed up and got a car.

LostGirl · 10/11/2009 18:17

Our local company's policy is that if there is no space for someone using a wheelchair then they have to phone and arrange a taxi to come and pick them up at the company's expense.
