last week the irish supreme court ruled that portmarnock golf club was not breaching equality legislation by being a men only private members club.
was wondering what the take on it from a womens forum would be.
i'll lay my cards on the table and say i'm a man and think it's a victory for common sense.

But there is a bit of a discrepancy between male-only attendees, and male-only administrators, which seems silly. Do the women get to make the tea still?

AtheneNoctua · 12/11/2009 16:16

Of course it is outright sexism. You knew that before you posted or wouldn't have said "i'll lay my cards on the table..."

Is the Irish Supreme Court by any chance made up of all men (who happen to be sexist golfers)?

And let's not forget what the GOLF acronym stands for in this very appropriate conversation.

AtheneNoctua · 12/11/2009 16:18

And I'm a bit puzzled about the women = bedroom comment. Presumably the bedroom is a place they both go... Or do you think the woman should go into the bedroom without the man???

daftpunk · 12/11/2009 16:23

it's not sexism.....not if women are allowed female only golf clubs...or female only any club....they must exist..?

why would a woman want to join a club full of men anyway....?

just to prove some political point..?

AtheneNoctua · 12/11/2009 16:45

To play golf, network, etc. -- all the same reasons a man would.

daftpunk · 12/11/2009 16:57

Start your own club that excludes men, play and network with women.....stop chasing men around

AtheneNoctua · 12/11/2009 20:36

Separate but equal is inherently unequal.

I don't know what this golf course its, but I'm guessing you can't go build another on just like it and call it women only.

daftpunk · 13/11/2009 10:41

don't agree with you.....keeping people seperate is a good thing in many cases...but i am a bit tribal..

plus i'm seeing this from my point of view...if i was in a club that had been women only for hundreds of years i would want that tradition kept...ie; i would want to keep men out....and i would fight in court if i had to.

works both ways...

mayorquimby · 13/11/2009 13:23

"oh no.....you sounded sensible untill that last post..."

dp i can assure you it was facetious reply to the post i quoted.

no the reason i said i'll lay my cards out is for two reasons.1. i know some find it bad form to ask others an opinion without first proferring your own. 2. i didn't want it to become some focal point later on in the thread if some posters did not know i was male and thought i was trying to drip feed or stealth information into the discussion if they became aware i was male. i.e. a normal discussion going on with us both proferring our sides, they realise i'm male, "oh well your a man you would think that",end of all debate. much better to let it be known from the start.

and no in this case the there were 2 female judges sitting in the collegiate court, one dissented one agreed.

Well, as I don't play golf and I don't live in Ireland this particular club's rules are unlikely to really effect me. But, let's face it GOLF (Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden) is historically and nortiously sexist. And tradition is in so many cases - as it is in this one - nothing but a euphamism for sexist.

Of course it is sexist for an organisation to say only one gender can hold a position of authority. Any rule applied to one gender and not the other but has nothing to do with specifically with that gender is by definition sexist.

I don't really see how you could see it any other way?

I can understand that an organisation was focussed on say prostate cancer recovery might be male only. That makes sense.

But, I don't belief golf (in spit of it's name's origin) can be said to be more for men than it is for women... especially since women are allowed to play, just don't get an equal vote in matters concerning the club.

Explain to me why you feel this is right?
