More than 25 miles of the M5 near Bristol have been closed after a car left the road and struck a pole carrying 11,000V electric cables.
Police were forced to close the busy motorway early on Friday after the cables were left dangling over the carriageway.
Motorists have been warned of "considerable delays" in the area.
The motorway is shut at junction 22 northbound and junction 18 southbound, with exit slip-roads also closed.
