Banning smoking outdoors?

Did anyone else hear about this on R4 (PM programme) this evening? I can't find an article about it anywhere. Is this a serious proposal?

It does make me when smokers complain about infringement of civil liberties over this issue. I don't believe I have ever heard a smoker talk about non-smokers' civil liberties being infringed every time someone lights up. And non-smokers have been putting up with second-hand smoke for about as long as humans have walked the earth. So although a very small part of me feels a wee bit sorry for smokers, that they're being pushed into a corner, the rest of me goes "ROFLROFLROFL it's about time."

Why don't people use those inhalators? They look like a brilliant idea. You get your nicotine fix and hold someting and put it in your mouth, but I supposed it does not look 'cool' but then smokers don't look cool anymore, just give them all dummies.

alwayslookingforanswers · 03/10/2009 17:55

no that's not what I'm assumign - no-one I know who has given up has found it easy. Just addictions are pretty complex things, some people have a "habit" that is easily broken, for those with real addictions, and other circumstances happening in their lives on top can make it nigh on impossible.

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 17:56

No, i'm happy for people to smoke in the car park. I'm happy for them to smoke in the street, I can always walk away. I am not happy for them to force me and my family inside to eat on a sunny day. I am not happy for them to light up outside hospitals [even though it is against the law]

that's all.

Ripe - because they're shite - make sod all difference, mind I'm one who when I decide it's time to quit (again) is going to have to be cold turkey with no aids, gum, patches, inhilators none worked previously

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 17:58

Well anywhere where you can't get away is key I suppose Riven.

DrNortherner · 03/10/2009 18:02

"Its not possible to go to the shops for half an hour and not smoke? Thats just silly. Smokers manage films, pubs, restaurants and flights. They can manage walking down the road I reckon."

But they might be on their way to a restaurant, or the cinema where they can't smoke so they have one outside, on their way.

And surely walking behind someone for like 2 seconds is not going to do you any harm. All thsi info we read about passive smoking is being subjected to it on a daily basis.

Remotew · 03/10/2009 18:02

Ok now we are getting somewhere. I don't and won't smoke in the bus shelter. I will also be more considerate when sat in a pub garden with people eating, which I am anyway, I think.

alwayslookingforanswers · 03/10/2009 18:02

smoking in bus shelters is against the law.

alwayslookingforanswers · 03/10/2009 18:04

I don't smoke in pub gardens.............probably because I never go to them

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 18:05

sitting outside with my family on a nice day, especially if we've decided to eat out, a rare expensive treat, is a very important luxury for me. So to have it spoilt by a smoker who has just finished their meal really fucks me off. If they want to smoke in the street I can walk past them. If they want to smoke in front of a pub's doors, fine, I can hold my breath.

SardineQueen · 03/10/2009 18:05

The OP said banning smoking outdoors, not just certain places outdoors.

People often have to leave the house for more than half an hour at a time. Some people live more than half an hour away from the shops etc. Some people work. Some people have to keep appoinments with doctors, hospitals, the jobcentre etc.

I do honestly think that quite a lot of the smokers with other issues would be effectively confined to their homes.

And yes I do feel sympathy for drug addicts etc and think people with addictions should be helped, not hidden away.

DrNortherner · 03/10/2009 18:05

It's windy tonight. Will be very hard to light my fag, but none of you lot consider me do you?

Friiight I hope they move it for you, I really do, it must be an added annoyance you can do without.

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 18:06

there is a pizzeria we like to go to as a treat. It has a small terrace, and if the restaurant is full, we sometimes eat there. It is not a drinks place, it is just for food. And people smoke on this tiny terrace. so the smoke is very strong. I wish they would ban it.

DrNortherner · 03/10/2009 18:06

People who fart in the street should be SHOT the selfish fuckers.

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 18:07

It is also about harm Riven. sitting next to a smoker outside triggers my asthma.

alwayslookingforanswers · 03/10/2009 18:07

PMSL - god you're better than I am Riven - if I need to fart I need to fart - sorry if it's a nasty one and there's someone walking right behind me.........but nature and all that

pofacedandproud · 03/10/2009 18:08

Straw man again Dr N. You are so sweet and considerate.

po the Stewartby brick works (15 miles from where we lived!) used to trigger my dad's asthma, and car fumes still often do if it's in a heavily trafficked area.

Think it should be up to restaurants and therefore up to us where we choose to eat/ drink to avoid it if we want to. I don't agree with banning. If a restaurant allows smoking outside and you don't like it then go somewhere else. I don't smoke but agree with freedom of choice. That said, I think banning smoking indoors was a great idea.

I would not go so far as to ban it in parks etc. as I think that is taking it a bit far.
