OMG - Gordon Brown will scrap Nursery Vouchers

BBC says here that Gordon Brown is going to scrap childcare vouchers:

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8279701.stm

We get two lots of vouchers and save about £150 a month. There's no way we'll both be able to keep working if they scrap them.

Keeping and continue to raise CTB and CB.

Support for teenage mums

ladyhelen2 · 29/09/2009 15:05

Yep there go the vouchers and in their place free child care places for 2 year olds.

pleasechange · 29/09/2009 15:06

itwascertainlyasurpise - what we mean is, it's pointless worrying about the precide details of Gordon Brown's intentions. We should probably be more interest in David Cameron's. Not saying these will be better, but very likely more relevant

alwayslookingforanswers · 29/09/2009 15:06

well I never - I've been put alongside teenage mum's. Mind you - I was asked for age verification this morning at Morrisons..........shame it was a machine that asked me and not a real person - ho hum.

DaisymooSteiner · 29/09/2009 15:07

"conservatives have a long history of looking after women and low income families, not... "

So how come then that all the evidence shows that in the first 6 years of Labour the poor were worse off than under John Major. Only recently has this started to be reversed?

ladyhelen2 · 29/09/2009 15:08

ASBOs now for parents and the children. That'll be interesting.

stealthsquiggle · 29/09/2009 15:08

Daisymoo - how about because the higher rate tax payer (which, believe me, does not equate to "rich" although clearly we are better off than many) is paying a damn sight more tax in the first place, and does not get CTC or any other means tested benefits at all whatsoever.

Cutting universal child benefit would have, financially, about the same impact on us, but somehow this would hurt a lot more.

ElenorRigby · 29/09/2009 15:09

allnew you are probably right but still Im crapping myself over this.
DD's nursery place has a salary sacrifice scheme without it, I do not think I could cope.

Completely agree stealthsquiggle. Hear, hear.

stealthsquiggle · 29/09/2009 15:13

Did anyone actually listen to the speech? Is this a manifesto threat promise or an immediate plan?

Once I have baby number 2, there's no way it will be worth it for me to work if DH and I can't get childcare vouchers. Argh. How soon could they take it away? I'm guessing / hoping not very quickly?

cleanandclothed · 29/09/2009 15:18

And breathe!
'1507From BBC deputy political editor James Landale: Mr Brown has just promised free childcare for half a million two year olds from less well off families. What he didn't say is that it won't happen for five years and that it will be funded by cutting childcare tax subsidies for those who are a little better off. Some will say this is hardly support for the middle classes. '

Presumably the childcare subsidies won't be cut for 5 years either? So it is really just an empty headline grabbing announcement because if GB is still PM in 5 years .....

cleanandclothed · 29/09/2009 15:20

Sorry crossposted with ladyhelen who was there minutes before me....

ElenorRigby · 29/09/2009 15:20

Hope thats right cleanandclothed!

Sunflower36 · 29/09/2009 15:23

So today, not only have working mums lost their childcare vouchers we have also been bashed for not feeding our children properly. I wonder what would happen to the economy if we all gave up work and became SAHM's....obviously our children would be better fed!

Cluckadoodledoo · 29/09/2009 15:24

As a non driving, former labour supporting, working Mother in a middle income bracket I am in !

I needed those vouchers when my dc's were small otherwise I wouldn't have been able to go to work and retrain to be a useful member of society.

So to sum up...

Teenage Mums get put in homes like they did in the 60's (one step from making them give up their kids too like they used to?)

Working Mums get no more Nursery credit unless really really poor (one of the good policies Labour introduced) especially tough now we can no longer swap childcare with friends!

But you get 2k to buy a new car!!!Ffs

Perhaps they will take the vote away from us pesky women next! I am sooooo mad!

ladyhelen2 · 29/09/2009 15:25

your post much more iformative cleaner!
now feeding DS2 so attention has waivered a bit.

[phew] in the short term but still at the long term. Those vouchers help people fund after school care and holiday care as well as nursery - so in giving a benefit for one year of a child's life (nursery places for 2yos) they would be taking away one (and note that they are talking about scrapping vouchers entirely, not just for us superrich higher rate tax payers) which tips the balance in favour of working for hundreds of thousands of parents of children from 0 to 16. How is that good for society, the economy, or, in fact, anyone ?

ladyhelen2 · 29/09/2009 15:36

Oh dear lord. Sorry to hijack on this but Sarah has just put in an appearance. Her dress! My eyes my eyes. Her hair and make up look lovely though.

ladyhelen2 · 29/09/2009 15:37
