How the mighty grace us with their largesse:

LOL at Jasper Gerard: "The school takes children of gas fitters and the unemployed, as well as those of Sevenoaks bankers."

Well isn't that just marvellous!

Puke

What is a gas fitter anyway? I've always wondered.

dollius · 23/09/2009 21:28

It's some sort of term that very posh people have for plumbers or somesuch

More to the point, the schools were giving bursaries for the children to go there.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/09/2009 21:40

My dad was a gas fitter. The person who mends your boiler when it's broken down. Only they're called service engineers now...

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 23/09/2009 21:41

I like to think of them as heating engineers.
No call for gas fitters where I grew up - we didn't have gas.

PeachesMcLean · 23/09/2009 21:52

Hugely patronising article.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/09/2009 21:55

Hmm - not a good idea to get either my dad or DH (a mechanical engineer) on the subject of fitters being called engineers

Dad called himself a fitter btw.
He isn't posh.

PeachesMcLean · 23/09/2009 21:59

That's odd. Dad called himself a gas man. I say he was a corgi

TheFallenMadonna · 23/09/2009 22:05

Ooh - Dad very of some corgi fitters too. He worked for the gas board, in various incarnations, and latterly British Gas. He is a gas fitting snob I think...

KittyCorncrake · 24/09/2009 17:44

indeed Peaches - the sentence where they say this will not benefit Telegraph readers - why do they assume none of the disadvantaged read the telegraph?

SomeGuy · 24/09/2009 18:18

You need to have a spare £30k/year to send your DS to Eton. I doubt the majority of Telegraph readers have that much cash lying around.
