i think it is an absolute disgrace getting a childs ears done. my dd will have to wait til she is at least 13. i think it should be illegal til 13 and the practices carrying out this torture on small children should be charged or refuse to do it when a child comes in with its parent.
why would anyone want to put their child through the pain and the possible health risks.
it just beggers belief

my God - where did they find that mother.... think they should have found someone who could string an argument together if she was meant to defend what I think is indefensible... did find it amusing that the pierced and tatooed woman was the voice of reason in the arguement...love it when perceptions are blown away especially on a program like GMTV which I think is the Daily Mail on TV...

also. did think that the point about MRA was intersting ... ha never considere that a risk before... so there is now even less chance of my 2 getting pierce and it was 0 before!!

Must admit I agree with SM1. When I was pregnant with dd I saw a very young baby - just a few months old - having her ears pierced in a shop window. I felt physically sick and didn't realise that this could be done. Apart from looking very tacky and chav (imho) it would be difficult to keep the area clean - because a baby/young child would keep their hands away wouldn't they?

I'm sure there is the arguement that it is a cultural thing for babies to have ears done early - but female circumcision is cultural - doesn't mean it is right!

(I'm not saying that ear piercing is on a par with female circumcision - before anyone starts!)

me and dh are both under the impression its a form of ABH.... just think that one day a child will be able to sue their parents for making them have it done because they didnt want it but had no choice!

Oh come on. I don't think it looks nice, bit common IMO (says the council house escapee) but I can't see the harm if someone wants it done.

Now gold bangles are another matter......

A couple of weeks ago I saw a baby of under 3 months having her ears pierced in Claires. It was very distressing and I can't believe it's legal tbh. It took 2 assistants to do it whilst the mother held the baby.

It was Claire's Accessories that I saw that young baby being done - isn't there an age limit.

I waited until I was 11 for my birthday present and had to badger my mum as she wanted to wait until I was older - def should not be able to do it before 10 imo.

Why not complain to Claires?

It is a cultural thing in some places. My friend's brother is married to a girl from Chile and she had their daughter's ears done as a baby because it's a status thing out there (where it's very class-based). Some other Med countries are the same.

I agree that it looks tacky and a totally unnecessary risk to health and hygiene. I had to wait til I was 12 and my dd will have to as well (if she wants them done at all).

i think is wrong you cant smack a child but you can stab them with a pin wheres the childs rights here

At least with a gold bangle, it can be taken off and leave no scar, OO. A baby can't give consent for these holes to be put into their ears. If I want holes in my ears then it's my choice, and surely it should be everyone's own choice, not their parents.

Yeah totally agree, its illegal to smack a child under three which is physically painful, but you can put pins in thier ears which is very painful for them just to be a wee fashion accessory! I remember when I was a child crying my eyes out wanting my ears pierced from about age 6 but my mum was for none of it. Eventually when I was 9 she took me to H sameul and made me watch a little girl having hers done, and although I was a little scared I still had them done. I would certainly have it made illegal on kids under 5!

I had mine done when I was about 10 and then a second hole when I was about 13. I never wear earrings now though. If dd wants them done she can have them done when she asks but I'm not going to do it till then. Dr Hilary Jones was saying that htere are all sorts of health risks- MRSA, Hepatitis B to name but 2. Even the lady from the piercing association thinks it's wrong to pierce babies

I could never ever put my dd through what is such an unecessary procedure. I feel bad enough making her go through her immunization injections! I think earrings on children look as common as it gets. I was made to wait until my periods started - i was nearly 14!

I was in Ibiza earlier this month and was amused to see that many of their baby dolls have pierced ears with tiny jewel studs in them.

I hate to see it. And where I live I sometimes see little boys with one ear pierced too! I was 7 when I had mine done.

sorry, but I think that little boys just look like thugs with their ear pierced. yuk

upsets me to think of a little baby in pain. How can someone hold there baby down whilst it's screaming in pain?? Am totally against it, maybe their should be a petition or sommat so theres an age limit, like for tattoos??
