Thread no 2

OP posts:
JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 16:15

Is this a good moment to mention that the Pregnancy book has just plopped on my desk and that Boco's illustrations are lovely?

Threadworm · 14/08/2009 16:16

"By submitting User Content, you also grant us the right, but not the obligation to use your biographical information including, without limitation, your name and geographical location in connection with broadcast, print, online, or other use or publication of your User Content."

(a) You need a comma after "obligation".

(b) that is the most utterly unreasonable and terrifying right you could possibly claim and a reason never ever to post again.

quoteTHISyafuckers · 14/08/2009 16:18

we-ell, Justine, it is a bit blackened grubby round the edges by now...

quoteTHISyafuckers · 14/08/2009 16:19

threadie - I am still trying to get my head round that (being a little slow of thinking) but my first reaction to reading that was ''run, run for the hills'' I have to say

oopsagainandagain · 14/08/2009 16:19

i believe it says that Mumsnet can pritn your name and where you live and pass this onot whoever they want to..

but i'm not a lawyer and nothing to do with internet etc.

But i can read english - and this is what it seems to say to me- threadworm, am i right?

Longtalljosie · 14/08/2009 16:19

Hi Justine. I think it is an infringement of copyright. I think you'll probably find that the odd quote would be fine, but lifting an entire thread - and making the thread the article rather than using it as a quote in a related article - is copyright infringement. Because they're essentially using the creative property of Mumsnet as a selling point of their own.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 16:20

Goodness is it? That's not good. Best talk to the lawyers about what it means/why it's there then.

morningpaper · 14/08/2009 16:20

Also this:

"By submitting User Content, you also grant us the right, but not the obligation to approach you from behind with a marrow at any point during the rest of your life, with or without your express permission"

oopsagainandagain · 14/08/2009 16:21

And if it applies retrospectively, a reason ask MN to take all your posts off the system permanently

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 16:22

Incidentally we have no intention of using anyone's personal details for anything at all as we explicitly say when you join up.

morningpaper · 14/08/2009 16:22

I thin kyou have to tick somewhere to sign up to new T&Cs if a site changes them

at elast that's the impression I get from logging back into the ITunes store four times a day

thumbwitch · 14/08/2009 16:23

What threadworm said, with bells on, big fuck-off alarm bells!

Don't like it AT ALL - please reassure us that it doesn't mean what it looks like it means, or CHANGE it so that it doesn't mean what it looks like it means!

And I still think if you are going to have any kind of negotiation with the DMlazyarsedbastards journos that you should insist that they reduce the posters names to simple initials, to avoid the ease of searching on their posting name.

Otherwise MN is going to become the most boring board ever in the collection of mum's boards, because no one will dare say anything controversial or upsetting about their family, in case one of them or their friends reads the Daily Hate and recognises them from the situation described!

thumbwitch · 14/08/2009 16:24

GAH! mums' boards...
and of course I meant parents' boards, not mums'

I'll get me coat....

Bella21 · 14/08/2009 16:25

I'm leaving. i already thought it was cheap and nasty to put all the tips into books and try to sell them back to us, but I hate this.

Adios, amigos.

oopsagainandagain · 14/08/2009 16:26

when i posted here I honeslty thought my posts belonged to MN and i trusted that they would not be passed onto another media in the same way that it seemed MN asked that i didn't post the same else where...

But it seems that now we all don't know what we agreed, MN or me..

so now what?!

Bella21 · 14/08/2009 16:29

And before I click on 'delete my registration, please feel free to sell my last post to the Daily Mail too:

I'm leaving. I already thought it was cheap and nasty to put all the tips into books and try to sell them back to us, but I hate this.

Adios, amigos.

Wankers.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 16:30

Sell
I give up!

StinkyFart · 14/08/2009 16:30

Honestly Bella was there any need to be so rude?

sigh

Frankly Justine following the whole GF debacle I'm somewhat surprised that MN don't seem to have much of a grip on the copyright issue. I'd have thought you'd have it nailed down TBH.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 16:33

GF wasn't about copyright - was about libel - I'm quite good on that!

MrTescoforcesDailyMailonme · 14/08/2009 16:33

I certainly think that no national newspaper should be allowed to publish our real usernames in connection with our posts - that's what makes us so easily searchable. Also, in case it does happen, MN will have to have clear warnings for users about choosing a username which can be searched easily after publication. No-one should have a username which their RL friends might associate them with.

oopsagainandagain · 14/08/2009 16:34

I really think the thing you've just put up as your terms and conditions says very very much otherwise, Justine- ie quite the opposite.

I hope you can get some clarification soon.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/08/2009 16:35

I'm sure you'll acknowledge that the two things are closely entwined as far as who wrote what and who is responsible for it once it's 'out there'.

morningpaper · 14/08/2009 16:38

Doodle-do Bella!
