Thread no 2

OP posts:
oopsagainandagain · 14/08/2009 23:29

omg there was amanda1
i enevr got an answer if she was for real or writing a book.

And justine- fair enough about whether or not you can sell our posts- but whilst you didn't know about the DM/whoever beign allowed to lift whole/part threads- why didn't you ask them not to until you had clarified the situation with your lawyer/the peopel involved?

saintlydamemrsturnip · 14/08/2009 23:30

Why 2shoes?

MN has been used as source material by journalists for years. I'm struggling to see what's so different about this article tbh. I don't think the journalist in question is out to get anyone. And I think it's a timely reminder to poster that this forum is public. Anyone can read it. Anyone can use it. Change your name regularly and be careful what you post.

BuffyTheFluffySlayer · 14/08/2009 23:30

Oh Justine. Another brandy??

Leah H has brought this on herself

JodieO · 14/08/2009 23:31

I think it's pretty horrific from either side to be honest. Noone has the upper ground in that respect.

Tortington · 14/08/2009 23:31

you can't buy that sort of advertising

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:31

Oh for goodness sake when did we say we thought it was a good business idea??? IT WASN'T OUR IDEA. There feel better for a shout.

KingCanuteIAmAndTheDMCanFOff · 14/08/2009 23:32

Saintly, I didn't say MNHQ should be - in fact my posts have stated I do not feel MNHQ should be protecting anyone themselves

Seriously, please read what I have said - I have no issue with it being a public forum or even having bits published occasionally??

expatinscotland · 14/08/2009 23:32

'omg there was amanda1
i enevr got an answer if she was for real or writing a book.'

that was going to be one of those moth-balled books no publisher would touch.

that was so contrived and stupid and i never understood why people got so caught up in that pile of tripe, offering to make wedding dresses and plan menus and shit.

Tortington · 14/08/2009 23:32

have a bud justine

say ...ahhhhhh

saintlydamemrsturnip · 14/08/2009 23:33

God she'd be mad to come on here right now. For a public flogging? I don't think it would show MN at its best.

I suspect she has more important things to worry about. I know I would if I'd written the article.

pointydog · 14/08/2009 23:33

I'm starting to panic. You lot have made me panic. I'm going to namechange all teh time now.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 14/08/2009 23:34

I forgive you expat. As long as you boycott those companies you hate so much, just like I do with nestle. And I would never condemn someone 'whoring themselves on the street for a fix' BTW.

Apologies for distraction, oopsagain

Returning briefly to the legal issues; it's hardly surprising that if the situation hasn't really arisen, MN haven't considered the legalities of reproducing posts wholesale. Though you'd think there might have been a bit of a legal shakedown at the time of the GF... episode.

AitchTwoOh · 14/08/2009 23:34

anyway justine did consult a newspaper expert (her dh) who said it was fair use. which presumably means that he would have run a similar piece in his august organ.

expatinscotland · 14/08/2009 23:34

oh, no!

don't, pointy!

then i'm not going to know any fucker.

pointydog · 14/08/2009 23:35

I don't think it would help if Lh came on here. She'd only age 10 years.

Tortington · 14/08/2009 23:35

every one knows anyfucker

i need a wee

BuffyTheFluffySlayer · 14/08/2009 23:35

Careful, there will be an article in it about the uproar on MN!!

I'm fluffybunny by the way, no journo. I'll slay them for you if you wish, steak? crusifix? sunlight?

Quattrocento · 14/08/2009 23:35

I happen to think it's bang out of order to delete posts outing the journo in question

Her name is on the DM articles FGS

Not to mention the fact that she started it all

Oy MN - what's going on?

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:36

Oops:
And justine- fair enough about whether or not you can sell our posts- but whilst you didn't know about the DM/whoever beign allowed to lift whole/part threads- why didn't you ask them not to until you had clarified the situation with your lawyer/the peopel involved?

Because until about 5pm today we thought they could - fair use blah blah. It's all unfolded on this very thread and is there for everyone to see.

As I've said a few times once we've confirmed the very hurried, blackberried legal opinion we've had we'll throw it open to Mnet to decide what next...

So far it seems the majority want us to either have a right of veto or get the column pulled altogether.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 14/08/2009 23:36

But King, if you post on here it can be used, because it is so public. It can be used whether or not MNHQ agree. And you'll come up in google a surprising number of time.

You just have to be aware of it that's all.

AitchTwoOh · 14/08/2009 23:36

"Change your name regularly and be careful what you post."

man, that's depressing. then it's just yahoo questions.

pointydog · 14/08/2009 23:37

I'll only make obvious changes, expat. I don't like changers, it's too confusing.

Tortington · 14/08/2009 23:38

i had a wee

oopsagainandagain · 14/08/2009 23:38

For me it is about posting stuff for an audience of parents, mainly on here.
And not expecting that those posts will then be taken wholeslae into another media completely and used for their financial gaina nd entertainment...

I felt that MN wasn't about to do this- the odd quote here and there that illustrate what people are saying about current events- fair enough.

But at this stage the "on MN this week" title and maybe next month a "what the daft twats on MN say" title etc etc... or the Sun/ladmag/whatever/political campaign/fuck knows who will use our stuff for their own business.

it just doesn't sit right to allow whole sale raids on the board without standing up for us first- or at least finding out IF it was allowed in law....

DailyMailCanLickMyBalls · 14/08/2009 23:38

I wonder whether next Thursday there will still be a 'This Week On Mumsnet' column in the DM? I'm pretty much assuming there will be. Which seems odd, and faintly outrageous.
