'Some people who are unable to pay should be treated, in my opinion. But, not able bodied people who are working illegally taking jobs from Americans who want to work but can't get a job because it's cheaper to pay an illegal alien cash in hand.'

Yep. Let 'em die. That'll teach them.

Bloss, I think you are right, the NHS is far from perfect, and could leanr much from teh way that other places do things. But all of those sytems that you cite seem to be equally 'Commie' in the eyes of the US Right.

AtheneNoctua · 14/08/2009 11:29

There is a two tier system in the UK. In my experience, the difference is the the two tiers in the US are closer together.

Of course Amercan taxpayers should not and are not responsible for illegal aliens. Do you think the UK is different? The NHS doesn't treat non-EU citizens who are not legal permanent residents here.

I'll drop this point now becaue I think it is straying into the immigration issue. But, even the Democrats, aren't proposing illegal aliens are covered.

I think that says more about Kentucky thanit does about the US in general.

I was definitely taught about world geography and world history.

PeachyAndTheDMSlackerJourno · 14/08/2009 11:33

No they're not AThene, for myself it was your dismissive use of aliens when you mean people that rankled.

There is perhaps a 2 tier system here but from my own experiences that gap is closing somewhat, a few years back waits were huge and you got less good service- what I am seeing (and I am talking non- A&E services now from what I have obsered in the SN world) is a closing of that gap: unless there is a specific local issue such as a SALT on mat leave, you are alomost always better placed with an NHS option and then you cash used to expand that with optional extras.

midnightexpress · 14/08/2009 11:34

Actaully, I think that NHS emergency treatment is available to everyone, regardless of nationality. They would not refuse anyone treatment in an emergency.

The following NHS treatment is available to anyone:-

  • Treatment in an emergency (but not follow up treatment).
  • Treatment of certain communicable diseases.
  • Compulsory psychiatric treatment.

i love the nhs, and whilst i agree with bloss that things could be done better - and whilst i also agree that its a misnoma to say " well its better than the us" which is a pants argument, i am in awe of the service i have

i have asthma - i pay a measley £16 pm for my medicine. how fabulous is that! it keeps me alive!

i have larvely teeth and can get them sorted - anything i need maximum payment under £300

free for my kids - wow!

partially deaf daughter (temporary condition) audiologists visits, doctors visits, hearing aid fittings, various tests, an operation,

cost to me at point of service - NIL

3 births, 1 near death experience, scbu for one child

cost to me at point of service -NIL

fat clinic
no smoking clinic
breastfeeding clinic
diabetes clinic
baby weigh in clinic
and others i forget

at POS - cost NIL - thats just at my doctors

ive had bad experiences like other people - but to just sit here and look back on teh amount of energency room visits i have had with kids jumping off walls - falling out of trees - boinking each other with something heavy - falling over,

i wold be skint for the rest of my life if i had to pay for that.

I think emergency treatment is also available to all in the US (thought I could be mistaken about whether this is national or by state).

What would yo like me to call people who have knowingly entered the US illegally?

Tortington · 14/08/2009 11:38

call them betty

Tortington · 14/08/2009 11:39

Also, I don't know how you can say that this tier and the 'comfortable insured' tier are closer together than the NHS/private sectors (I assume that is what you meant) in the UK.

I think that the NHS is fabbo.

Of course it has its faults, but on the whole I believe that we really are lucky to have such a system in place in the UK.

Tortington · 14/08/2009 11:42

amen leonie!

My SIL is from Kentucky and she was rather insulted when I asked her if she knew that Hampton Court was the home of Henry VII. So, maybe it's you?

I do take the point that Americans generally are not well travelled and sometimes forget to consider the outside world. But, not knowing thay the UK is made up of more than just England and that (Southern) Ireland is not part of it is pretty extreme.
