Sounds like he did a great job but I would never consider putting my 11 year old in that position. I think she should have left the adult alone - hard as that might have been rather than expecting a child to navigate obviously challenging terrain. Adults get lost on straightforward paths never mind a scared and tired 11 year old. Alls well that ends well though I suppose.

Agree, mrs b. Sounds like they really had luck on their side. Trying to walk down a rocky path in the dark, when they'd sent for help already is incredibly stupid.

It always amazes me how many people go out on these type of walks completely unprepared and uninformed about basic safety and emergency procedures.

I know! I think they set out too late in the day as well. (And yes the 3 legged dog did have me chuckling) They were lucky the weather didn't go bad on them as well.

I think they were intending to camp overnight - but even so you need to start earlier or you end up falling down a ravine struggling in the dark.

I get really cross with people who set out like this, totally unprepared and without telling anyone where they are going. Really irresponsible in this case as the DD was only 7! They did not intend to camp out overnight - they had arrived in the area, set up camp and then gone for a 'walk' before tea (info from local paper). There are accidents and there is gross stupidity.

NL says 'all's well that ends well' but what about the helicopter scrambled from Lossiemouth? Thousands of pounds it costs and WE pay the bill. Meanwhile, our troops are suffering because of a shortage of helicopters.........

The mountain rescue teams must get so hacked off having to rescue numpties like this. It's such a complete waste of resources. Makes me really .

Waht would have happened if the 11yo had fallen and broken his leg? All alone, no one knowing where he was, dark falling and no help on the way for any of them.

The more I think about this the crosser I get with the mother.

Why on earth didn't they leave the grandad and go together? He would have been at least risk out of all of them.

Agree with Edam except Grandads a numpty too. They set out on this walk without the knowledge/experience/right equipment so hes equally toblame
