Surely we are talking about a woman with an eating disorder or at the very least, some serious issues about her body image? Her career (like many others) has been largely based on what she looks like rather than any amazing acting ability and now she will prioritise trying to get her body to look like she hasn't had a baby (and we all know how hard that is!) so she can get back to work asap, and in the process miss out on the most wonderful experience life offers. That is a shame. Big time.

I know someone who used to go out with David Thewlis and all I can say is, I hope he has changed!

oliveoil · 18/05/2005 13:33

But it isn't impossible to get back into shape without starving yourself! I weigh less now than I did before both pregnancies and I don't have a personal trainer/nanny/kabbala guru etc or an eating disorder. I just ate properly and ran around after two childen and pushed a v heavy double buggy around everywhere.

Just because a celeb looks skinny and seemed to have pinged back into shape she will still have the crepey 'rice pudding skin' tummy we all have, it will just be camoflaged in Chloe tops for £459.

dyzzidi · 18/05/2005 13:39

Oliveoil I think its great 'after the baby' am just a bit concerned about the whilst pregnant stuff.

Good for you by the way

At six weeks pregnant my boobs have exploded into epic sizes and I am already in maternity bra's so i shall not be holding my breath for me!

Ulysees · 18/05/2005 13:43

Was anyone else annoyed at Sharon Stone's comments about single mother's being able to 'have it all'. Is it just me? She has a bastion of people helping her no doubt?

Ulysees · 18/05/2005 13:43

sorry, was off the subject there but needed a rant

dyzzidi · 18/05/2005 13:50

I know what you mean ulysses a Single hollywood parent means one mother and an army of paid help available 24/7

DillyDally · 18/05/2005 13:52

Sharon Stone meant SHE was able to have it all
Anna friel - what has happened to you? I seem to remember lots of nauseating articles on how much you wanted children and the problems you had conceiving and now this. tsk tsk.

Ulysees · 18/05/2005 13:54

Well the quote I read on Sky news was "single mothers can have it all" She may have been misquoted though?

Ulysees · 18/05/2005 13:54

And anyway if she did say SHE then she deserves to be on the slap thread IMO for gloating.

DillyDally · 18/05/2005 13:56

Sorry, I meant that she said single mothers can...but that it really means that she can

motherinferior · 18/05/2005 14:14

Fabulous, Batters...

Look, maybe she just hates the ballooning of pregnancy. I know I did - it made me intensely miserable every time someone commented, and there was no way I was going to 'enjoy' it. Sure, she's being a prat, but I can understand that - and come to that I can understand why she's planning to go back to work pretty soon after her baby. She may change her mind and find that a small baby is indeed the most wonderful experience life offers. She may not. Some of us do go back after a few months, and - dare I say it - find it a relief.

crunchie · 18/05/2005 14:42

I read this in Grazia yesterday and all I could think was 'Poor cow'. She feels like she has to worry what she looks like and a film role she has agreed to 3 months afterthe baby is born. The director of the film keeps winding her up about gratuitous (SP?) nude scenes and her homones are probably shot to pieces.

I really do feel for some of these celebs as others have said, 'dammed if they do and dammed if they don't' Fat and frumpy is bad, so is skinny and fashionable. At least being me I didn't have to worry what others would say/print I only had to worry what I thought.

Sure she sounds totally mad, but she is not really 'dieting' whilst pg, more eating healthily not pigging out. I remember a thread a while back about someone asking how many calories are needed and actually counting them whilst pg. She is only doing the same. Yoga is not that bad if you can do it whilst pg, and she says she is going to excercise after the baby was born. I went to the gym 5 weeks after a c-section, I was running about 9 weeks after. I didn't see it as wrong, I still breast fed and lost weight quickly. I was far thinner about 4 months after the baby was born than before I got pg (now I am far fatter )

Poor girl, she is setting herself up for such a fall

FairyMum · 18/05/2005 17:10

I don't get irritated with poor Anna. I get irritated with all the magazines writing about all these celebs who are back in their size 6 jeans weeks after birth. I just hope it doesn't lead to women getting eating disorders in pregnancy. You don't need any of this additional pressure on top of everything else when you are a new mum.

I was one of those with good genes who was back in my jeans pretty quickly after all 3 babies, but then I had PND after DD and severe hair loss after all 3 which wasn't nice either. You have to give your body months to get back into shape. I think it's really irresponsible of these magazines to promote any other ideas! Hasn't there been a lot about the media contributing to eating disorders in young girls and boys? And now they are going for the pregnant ones too? FFS!

WideWebWitch · 18/05/2005 17:20

Ooh, I liked The Guardian article, thanks for that. I've never been keen on Anna Friel either but hey, she's in a for a big shock.

jangus · 18/05/2005 18:42

I agree with Marina that she probably does have her own demons to deal with and that's why she's saying what she is. However, it is disturbing that some folk will look at this, be influenced by it and think that it is safe practice during pregnancy without realising the risks.
I mean if anything terrible happened when you were doing your best to do everything right (ie. eating a variety of food, not smoking, not drinking etc) you would be totally devastated.... how on earth would you feel if you looked back and thought "what if I did this or that..."

highlander · 18/05/2005 21:13

Hmm, eating a very healthy diet and doing appropriate amounts of exercise. Sounds like a recipe for a helathy mum and baby to me . Yes, it's hard refusing the choccy bars, but that doesn't mean her pregnancy is miserable! Why women/society have the attitude that it's OK to just pig out and sit about during pregnancy is beyond me - that's a recipe for gestaitional diabtetes and hypertension. Now is that a good start for your baby? Nope!

As for going back to work when the babe is 3 months old But then, as an actress (thus self-employed??), she doesn't get traditional maternity leave, doesn't know if anyone is going to ever employ her again so I guess must take whatever good jobs are offered.

jampots · 18/05/2005 21:22

when I was pregnant with dd (first preg) I remember telling my boss at the time that I had a high pain threshold and couldnt see how labour would hurt that much

now where's that humble pie??

I truly dont wish ill on this girl but please God let her have a big belly with stretch marks

aloha · 18/05/2005 21:30

She's a bit dim frankly. I've interviewed her and thought, earnest, sweet, wants to be seen as ambitious/committed/cool...but comes over as dim.

JoolsToo · 18/05/2005 21:32

mathamoo - [msl!!!!!!!!!!

dinny · 18/05/2005 21:33

kama
you bring up an important point, some mother return to work soon after their children are born b/c they have to to pay the bills. it's being an issue is a luxury some cannot afford.
