eeer the last I heard MJ was found innocent

Penthesileia · 28/06/2009 00:16

OK, fair enough. I stand corrected.

I don't think I'm being particularly "breathless" about art, though perhaps you see it that way.

I am genuinely interested in the art/morality question; and I don't think it's answered by an extreme response in either direction.

Penthesileia · 28/06/2009 00:17

LOL @ shit records.

Penthesileia · 28/06/2009 00:19

Before you posted that last message I was going to say that people don't really excuse MJJ (for instance) for his crimes because of his talent; but put in sharp relief with the considerably less talented Mr. Glitter, I can now sort of see your point.

Ninkynork · 28/06/2009 00:25

"the considerably less talented Mr. Glitter"

tiredsville · 28/06/2009 00:30

Both Gary Glitter and King were found guilty, MJ was not. If MJ had a portfollio of child porn on his computer rest assured the majority wouldn't be excusing him.

SolidGoldBrass · 28/06/2009 00:34

Hmm, I wonder what will happen when Gary Glitter dies - will there be a reappraisal of his 'genius'? (And I did like his music in my younger days and saw him in concert a few times. But a few years ago when I was DJin at a party and put on one of his songs, complaints were made. Erm, I didn't put the song on to make any kind of point - TBH I had been drinking and had simply forgotten all about the allegations and fancied playing the song...)

The Chandler boy had an unusual relationship with his father, his father hit him over the head with a 12-and-a-half-pound weight, sprayed him with Mace and tried to choke him. As a result he got a restraining order against his father. This was when he was 26 and the two were still living together.

The Chandlers were trying to get $20 million out of Jackson and the father hated Jackson. As to whether the boy was abused by Jackson, as he was by his father, is clearly in doubt.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_child_sexual_abuse_accusations_against_Michael_Jackson]

It is unclear whether the description given of Jackson's penis was accurate or not.

Jackson's insurers paid the Chandlers $22 million, apparently against Jackson's wishes.

Incidentally a large number of male pop stars have had sex with underage groupies. R Kelly, who wrote songs for Jackson, was convicted of filming sex he had a 14-year-old. This generally doesn't cost them many fans; in the case of King (who had sex with 14 and 15 year old boys) I guess the problem for society was that they were boys rather than girls.

mrsruffallo · 28/06/2009 01:01

Er no SomeGuy the problem with society was that grown men came forward decades later to complain about being unwillingly seduced by JK

SomeGuy · 28/06/2009 01:08

Well that could be, I'm not an expert on Jonathan King I have to say. AFAIK, he used his position to get boys to have sex with him, something that male pop stars have done to girls for years, and will continue to do so.

mrsruffallo · 28/06/2009 01:21

I'm no expert either, but you can read myriad
reports on the internet concerning the men taking legal action as adults.
I don't have a problem with growm women who wnt to slep with pop stars.

SomeGuy · 28/06/2009 01:24

Anyway, obviously Jackson turned into a complete freak, for whatever reason, who thought it was ok to effectively buy people's love (even if non-sexual), and that it was ok to have children sleep in the same bed as him.

But then I guess megastars do tend to go weird, he's hardly unique in that respect.

Jumente · 28/06/2009 08:04

SEA, some people just revel in the opportunity to put the knife in - once they see a hint of a case against someone, proven or not, it's carte blanche to pull them to pieces as an example of evil personified.

I don't give a shit whether MJ was in fact guilty or not - it's none of my business, seeing as the children involved are obviously being looked out for already - he did some good songs, that part of him was pretty cool, and other stuff he may have done was perhaps shitty. That's it. Can a person not have a good part as well as bad - or are we all black or white, good or bad - how simplistic.

In fact when this kind of pillorying takes place it is usually because some people are projecting their feelings towards their OWN abuser from the past onto someone in the present. It's an outlet for people to fling all their personal anger at whether it's appropriate or not. How fun.

HerHonesty · 28/06/2009 10:05

in terms of musical genius, how can you even put michael jackson and gary glitter in the same sentence?

bobbysmum07 · 28/06/2009 10:14

The tragedy of Michael Jackson is that he spent his entire life surrounded by dubious people who wanted a piece of him. He had no choice other than to buy people's love - it was the only way for him to get it.

That's probably why he liked being around kids. He tried to buy their love too, with amusement parks and ice cream, but at least what he got back in return was genuine.

purepurple · 28/06/2009 10:16

Just heard the news and michael jackson is still dead

ilovemydogandmrobama · 28/06/2009 10:47

Conspiracy theories and that he's still alive will be next.

monkeytrousers · 28/06/2009 10:48

Dit, this is not so cut and dry and you are attempting to make out. You are however filling in the gaps with your own overactive imaginings. As per.

Let the man go cold.

blueshoes · 28/06/2009 10:48

But Gary Glitter could not dance

monkeytrousers · 28/06/2009 11:05
monkeytrousers · 28/06/2009 11:15

Penth - you're not beibgf hysterical. No idea why you keep thinking I'm talking about you.

Ninky - re Elvis. A paedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to pre-pubesaent children, that's pre-puberty.

The age of consent is different around the world. In some provinces of Japan it is 13.

Some one fancying a post-puberty, physically mmature girl is not a paedophile. If they have sex with them when they are technicallyt unbdersage that is a crime, but not one of paerdophilia.

Penthesileia · 28/06/2009 11:21

I know, monkeytrousers! I was just joking about the ironic fact that the thing which actually makes me hysterical is being called hysterical (when, IMO, I'm not being hysterical). Y'know: when someone says "Calm down, calm down!" And you scream, "I AM calm!!!"
