Oh dear, very sad. Hope she recovers.

This is actually a nightmare of mine, I drive DH crazy going around the house tying knots in stuff like blind cords. It hadn't been anything that crossed my mind until i read a newspaper article about a little girl who died this way, and its concerned me since.

Hope she recovers

eandh · 26/05/2009 20:26

neither of my dd's blinds have cords I have 2 hooks screwed to the wall and roll the blind up and slot into the hooks especially as both of teir beds are near the windows so removes any temptation!

The blind downstairs is knotted as is the landing one and all the blinds in the playroom were specially made and have short cords - it is one of a few things that really worries me especially as dd2 is such a climber

FabulousBakerGirl · 26/05/2009 20:48

hAVE SENT DH to sort out the ones in DS and DD room.

God yes!!!
My ds (was three at the time, and we thought 'quie clued up') had some venetian blinds in his room.
We used to pull them up in a morning, so the cord ended up really long.
Also under my sons window, was one of those large ride on thomas the tank engines.

One day I was in my room, and I heard him crying.

He had CLIMBED onto his windowsill, WRAPPED the blind cord around his NECK , and JUMPED off the windowsill!!!!!

LUCKILY the train was there, and he had managed to balance on it on his tip toes, therefore, not strangling himself to death!
He was ok, but he was left with a bruise and scabs around his neck for about a week.

That's really sad.

As well as cords, also be aware of the loops left hanging when you collapse a rotary washing line - I heard of a child dying after getting tangled in one whilst playing in the garden

BCNS · 26/05/2009 22:39

DS2 had a lucky escape when at 5 years old at his dad ( he was down there for the weekend) was left alone with a kite.
Ended up with the string round his neck cutting into it.

and yes I went mad!

sleepyeyes · 27/05/2009 00:37

It's been reported on TMZ that Tyson's little girl has died.
So incredibly sad.

I once cared for a child whom almost hanged himself luckily his father was in the same room, the bruising on his neck afterwards was horrifying.

Tie up/hang up/get rid of your cords no matter how old or sensible you think you kids are these accidents can happen to anyone.

mamadiva · 27/05/2009 08:13

I read the story yesterday but now it appears she has died

What a horrible, tragic accident!

If anything I hope this makes everyone realise it is so easy for this kind of thing to happenand to sort out any cords etc.

I am going to show this to DP because I put all the cords up on one of those sticky out drawing pins at the top of the windows and the rest I tuck away etc and he kept telling me not to be so bloody paranoid, sadly now I have a yet another reason to do it and DP can moan about it looking stupid all he wants.

My thoughts are with the Tyson's at the moment I hope somehow they can get through this awful tragedy and the pain it brings

TigersChick · 27/05/2009 08:20

Just heard this on the radio news.

How terribly sad

We don't have any blinds but we are bad about leaving the lap-top wire trailing across the room ... must be more careful.

mrsdisorganised · 27/05/2009 08:22
Sad
PM73 · 27/05/2009 08:43

Very sad,i hope the family can get through this ok.

I always loop the cords on our blinds round & round the hook, but it just goes to show that danger can be anywhere.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 08:49

Oh no.

I was so hoping she would be okay.

Just realised there is a loop coming down from DS2's curtain. Off to sort that now.

Why are blind, etc makers still using solid loops? Why can't they be two single pieces of string?

Very sad. I am also the same with balloons, if the kids got party bags with a balloon in I threw the balloon out before giving to the kids.

A local child had one pop in her mouth and blocked her air way and she died.

Do I feel mean for doing this, hell no!

Divvy · 27/05/2009 09:04

Also, the sure start book bags that are given out, also have very long handles, and I knot those as well....why cant they just make them short handles? The kids love walking around with there new book bags, why dont they think about these things?

I am talking about the ones HV give out at 18 months, and they are handed to your child as a gift!

Here child go strangle yourself, they might as well say, while handing them over.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 09:12

I used to tie crisp bags in a knot before putting them in the bin when the kids were small. Possibly OTT but it has been bad enough when mine have had accidents I couldn't prevent without ones that could have been. Dh has cut off all the threads hanging down from the curtains.
