I saw this and it's blatantly staged.

Not the actual shooting obviously but definitely the interview with that girl and also the guy near the end.

jasper · 22/05/2009 12:13

what's a wog?

BunnyLebowski · 22/05/2009 12:15

Usually a racist insult towards dark skinned people (comes from Golliwog )

In this context I believe it's directed towards New Zealanders.

ninedragons · 22/05/2009 12:16

It's a derogatory term for someone of Mediterranean extraction. They showed the whole thing on one of the commercial news stations and I was horrified, frankly.

ninedragons · 22/05/2009 12:17

No, it's definitely not applied to Kiwis. She may have mistaken Islanders or Maoris for Mediterranean people but it's not a broad term for dark-skinned people.

jasper · 22/05/2009 12:20

Bunny, that's what I knew it as in the past.
Can't believe people still openly use that term

ninedragons · 22/05/2009 12:24

In Australia it's quite specific.

She's vile. But I bet she'll end up as the centrefold in FHM or whatever vile lads' mags are around at the moment.

SomeGuy · 22/05/2009 13:44

her performance is amazing. The whole thing from start to finish. There's the casual/confident racism, the liberal use of Australianisms - like 'bru' and 'ey', 'my fully sick boys', the way she goes from the confident 'chk chk boom' to a sad tone of voice almost crying as she remembers the horror.

proof if it were needed

SomeGuy · 24/05/2009 00:37

hehe. I wonder how long she spent planning it. Like I said, it was nicely done.

I spent a long time in Australia and the Aussies are just about the most racist people you will ever meet. Sweeping statement, I know - but I was staggered by how blatant and unashamed they are about it.

SomeGuy · 24/05/2009 10:14

I think most countries are more racist than Britain is. There's a lot of prejudice against black people in Asia for example.

casual racism is evidently not an impediment to career progression in Australia:

She is an idiot. Most Australians think she is an idiot. The term wog is derogatory and I have actually not heard anyone under the ago of 30 use it for a long time. It was used to describe people usually from Italy or Greece. Used very heavily from the 1950's onwards (post WW2 immigration and Snowy Dam scheme)
