I heard this today, I nearly crashed the car so great was my indignation!

He was like some kind of cartoon toff!

We are all jealous of his house 'that looks a bit like Balmoral'. Am I being bourgious(fecking spelling) in asking 'if you have a house thats a bit like Balmoral, why the farking feck am I paying for your goose bothering?'

How the hell do you misunderstand the rules to such an extent you spend thousands on a bloody water feature?

I think David Cameron is privately celebrating the fact that he has people like the Duck Pond man and the Moat man and the 'Balmoral' man to make examples of... gives him greater ammo to 'purge' the Tory party of the out-of-touch Old-Etonian types that he believes the British public might perceive them to be...

Rather taking the spotlight off the fraudulent bastards who have 'flipped' their homes etc

And another reason why I could NEVER vote Conservative

That might not make sense because I've been at the vin rouge

problem is, Bernard, (and I am a life long Labour voter who has just got soooo pissed off with Gordy and his chums) who do you vote for then? I live in St David of Cameron's constituency so in reality my vote counts not a jot, but I am in a real dilemma over this. DH, who is also a life long nonTory has announced he will vote for DC next time round.

For every Moat man at Parliament level there are 100s at local level, aren't there? In core beliefs and attitudes, anyway

Cameron will never purge the tories of all the out-of-touch eton types though. there are too many on the front bench.

tigerdriver: labour are bad, but the tories would be worse. they're already talking about 80s-style cuts - remember the 3 million unemployed? all those teacher strikes? there will be cuts under labour too, I know, but they do have the better record for public services. and actually, I don't think Gordon's that bad really. he's just very bad at PR, and Dc is very good at that. it upsets me that the electorate are that shallow really.

yes, there must be, Bernard, I guess - you only have to look at the party conference to see the blue rinse hang em high brigade, and crikey you should've heard the moans from our neighbours (ditto) when I refused a gigantic banner in my garden a coupla elections ago (they have given up on us since).

But in the Euros, Greens are ok (I guess, I have no idea who our candidates are but I would bet as much money as these creeps have embezzled claimed, that the Tory will prevail for my green and pleasant bit of land), however in real elections they aren't really an option other than a protest vote. What do you do? Or rather, to depersonalise it, what does one do?

vote labour and hope for a hung parliament (because it's not like they'll win). it won't change things fast, but it will help

SP : yes , I do remember all that, and the winter of discontent and both miners' strikes.

I do think though that politics and politicians are now sooo much more about spin, which is a huge loss clearly, but frankly, GB is so bad at spin, that that worries me too - he's not a cuddly old fuddy duddy, he just doesn't convince as a leader. I really just don't know, it would break my heart to vote Tory, but I just can't feel that this bunch, and also the Tony Blair legacy (remember the unfortunate warmongering?), can pursuade me to vote Labour any more.

And I also feel that it is a breach of one's civic duty not to vote. AAARRGGH

according to newsnight, Steen's had a little bit of a rethink and now realises the public might have a legitimate interest in how he spends our money. Presumably one of DC's assistants had a Vulcan death grip round his neck at that point.

Maybe his original interview could become a YouTube classic or something. He does have an amazing voice, like a spoilt prep school boy having a temper tantrum.

It won't affect my vote at the Election though, DC has come across so much better than GB in all this. And there isn't too much to choose in terms of backbench corruption from what I can gather, except that Labour have been in charge and have set the rules for this mess.

Apparently Steen has done some good though - he's been a leading campaigner to change the law to protect victims of trafficking (which I wish everyone would call by it's real name, slavery).

The thing is SOME people probably ARE jealous (not me, BTW) But he is so obviously out of touch with the way the world works he doesn't realise it's not a good idea to actually say that in public. Which is a good a reason as any for him to stand down.

I don't think the Tories have changed much, they have just realised its daft to actually say out loud what you really think stupid things like Steen has in public. Well at least David Cameron has, and I expect a lot of the 'toffs' think he has sold out to New Labour Spin etc.

I have heard an awful lot of people with the sentiment of 'huh, I wish I could fiddle my expenses like that' rather than it's actually MORALLY WRONG to do so.

What MPs have been doing over expenses is wrong but actually a lot of the current moral outrage is that people feel hard up due to the recesison and just think MPs should be paid less. Its as simple as that. People do envy their salaries, long holidays, second homes paid for by the state.

I just think MPs should have a secure 'hotel' with serviced apartments in to live in while in London. These should be provided by the state during week and then go home to their constituency home in holidays and at weekend - just like most people who work away from home in normal jobs do.

They already get subsidised meals/drinks in Parliament buildings anyway - just like people in normal jobs with staff canteens.

Remove the whole expenses and second home allowance all together so there can be no 'mistakes' at all.

Most people on benefits have a reason to screw the system though. MPs already earn £65k, they aren't on the breadline.

(Heard an expert who has crunched the figures work out that the state pension is only 2/3 of the amount needed to live a healthy life - afford a decent diet, heating, get out of the house and maintain social contact etc. etc. etc. Benefits don't give you any more to live on as far as I know.)

As for people being jealous, the point is HE has been stealing OUR money.
