Very good site with information and links about the BNP

If you know someone who's thinking about voting for the BNP, see if you can get them to have a look at this site: There's Nothing British about the BNP

It's run by two men from the Conservative Home site, so it's not lefty propaganda (like most of my links )

I was quite shocked today to receive a BNP election leaflet with my post - this has never happened to me before. (That makes me sounds as though I have erectile difficulty, doesn't it?)

i received one too PW, tis currently in my bonfire pile

IorekByrnison · 15/05/2009 17:08

I haven't had one yet. I did have a very unpleasant, 1930's Germany sort of feeling last night during the UKIP broadcast that came on after newsnight though.

policywonk · 15/05/2009 17:52

I was cross - I wanted to run off down the road and stuff it back down the deliverer's throat, but I wasn't here when it arrived.

I can't work out whether this BNP stuff is over-egged and not that many people are going to vote for them (in which case it would probably be better to play it down), or whether we're all going to wake up on June 5 with national socialist councillors.

Mmm, so here's a dilemma: should I send this site to a few people in my address book who are, erm, less than actively politically engaged (and therefore might be at risk of falling for some of the BNP's nicey-nicey act), or is sending someone a link like this tantamount to saying 'I think you're a bit of an arse'?

I had a leaflet with a pic of a man spraying infectious filth from his mouth. I thought it was a BNP leaflet but it turned out just to be the swine flu 'how not to die' leaflet.

IorekByrnison · 15/05/2009 18:02

I don't know. Do you think these people really might vote BNP?

Did you see the UKIP broadcast last night? It really looked nasty to me, and they seem to be doing rather better than the BNP. I feel more worried about them at the moment, but I suppose it is all part of the same depressing picture.

policywonk · 15/05/2009 18:04

Robes. Perhaps swine flu is a giant metaphor?

Iorek - no, I don't think the actual people I have in mind might - but I bet some of the people they know might, if you see what I mean. H*rsh!m is pretty solid white working class territory, and very right wing.

I didn't see the UKIP thing. Why was it particularly scary?

I think sending that link would be a bit like giving someone deodourant for a birthday present -- a nice way of saying 'you stink'.

WhaleOilBeefHooked · 15/05/2009 18:06

Reading that made me shudder.

Thankfully no one in my family or circle of friends tolerates the BNP. There is a house round the corner from me which has an England flag in the window and a hand written 'vote BNP' sign. It makes me feel angry walking past. I hate that our flag is so often used in a racist way.

rubyslippers · 15/05/2009 18:08

actually i would send it

I was at the criminal convictions

the BNP, sadly, are very active at a local level where i live

they always leaflet at night

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/05/2009 18:10

Can't you send the link with a note saying something like 'Might be useful if you're arguing with someone and need some ammo.' I was going to send it to my most anti-fascist friends anyway.

policywonk · 15/05/2009 18:46

That's my worry, Robes. Maybe I should try it Kathy's way.

WhaleOil, did you see the various St George's Day shindigs this year? Various people trying to reclaim the day/flag from the far-right (nearly wrote 'fart-right', hur). There was a Boris-led one in Trafalgar Square with lots of folk singers. I think Billy Bragg did one as well.

UKIP party political broadcast here. Very strident rhetoric on immigration towards the end.

Think you should send the link, but in a big group e-mail so that nobody feels that you are particularly singling them out as a thick fascist.

wobbegong · 15/05/2009 18:49

God, have you seen the bunch of bile in the comments on the Telegraph website to the article suggesting that the BNP should be denied the "oxygen of publicity":

scarey comments on this article

God it make me so depressed. I'm with policywonk- don't know if it's being overegged but I zam a bit worried about the way that they are taken by the BBC and others as "just another political party".

jambutty · 15/05/2009 18:50

When I rip up leaflets I always want the people who sent them to SEE me doing it - shouting "how dare you think I'm interested in this shite you fucking fascist wankers!" doesn't have the same effect when you're yelling it at the bin.

I did do that to some BNP who leafletted me in Coventry once. They were big and bald and they laughed at me apart from one good looking one who apologised quietly when his mates had gone.

jambutty · 15/05/2009 18:54

On the website though, I wouldn't be offended if a friend sent me that because I'd assume they thought I had the same mindset as them.
