Hazel Blears has just written a cheque

for £13,000 to the inland revenue.

Am I alone in being absolutely staggered that she has enough cash to do that???

That is more than a year's pay for me!!!!

Absolutely agree. The writing of the cheque and holding up on the news was the worst thing yet. Like anybody I know could afford to write a cheque for £1000 let alone £13000. Smug, thieving and completely out of touch...

Why is it impossible to think that she might have an Offset mortgage account? Twould make 13k quite accessible on a London property.

I am not at all surprised she has £13k to pay just like that. Politicians get paid for a lot more than just being an MP, they have consulation groups they advise to etc which they get a fee for etc etc and she has a husband doesn't she Who has an income that is I would presume not a low income?

And, she has also made savings here and there, you know, from this expense being paid etc.

That waving-the-cheque-around thing with Blears today makes me loathe her even more! Paying back the money isn't the point; they seem to think that by returning it, all will be forgiven and we'll suddenly respect them.

They just don't seem to realise that there's no point stuffing your cock back in your trousers after you've been caught with it in another woman's hootsit. So to speak. The damage has been done.

lljkk - what do you mean about the offset mortgage account?

I ask because I have one, and a massive mortgage that I will be paying forever, and I live in London.

There is no way I could write a cheque for £13K. (puzzled)

If you have an offset mortgage and have paid back a large chunk of it some offset mortgage accounts allow you to borrow back up to your original limit without any need to apply just by writing a cheque!!

Will she also be paying the fines (different amounts depending on whether it was 'accidental' or not) that the rest of us mere mortals would have to pay if the Inland Revenue decided that we'd tried to pull a fast one ?

Agree with Squeaver's DH - HMRC will not accept it anyway. If there is no accompanying tax return they will just credit her account and probably pay it straight back.

She may already have her accountant working on the tax return, and a good reason why she omitted the gain. SHe will get a penalty.

However, I suspect that there might not actually have been any tax to pay because of technicalities of tax law - do we know how long she had the flat for?

Was looking for images of The Cheque to see who HB had made it out to (she kept saying "Inland Revenue") to spot that a) it's her birthday today and b) she was in 'A Taste of Honey' as a child. And how many image changes has she had? Still can't stand that simpering smile

Agree with everyone that images of MPs handing over cheques make me sick. Just a stunt. And if they imagine it's somehow going to make up for being thieving bastards in the first place they have got another think coming.

I'm tempted to find a small party that is desperate for MEP candidates next time around (too late this time, damn).
