Swine Flu. Are we in big trouble with this then?

This sounds worse than the bird flu that thankfully never really happened.

Sky news have a press conference on now about possible cases in new york. When do we start panic buying .

Mrsprepared · 29/04/2009 14:11

Upwind, I agree always good to have a supply even if it is only there to make you feel safer.

flymetothemoon · 29/04/2009 15:15

Hmm not sure I'm going to go as far as withdrawing ds from nursery and retreating into the house just yet.

But I do have weirdly achy limbs, a sore throat and am feeling a bit shivery [paranoia smiley]

wishingchair · 29/04/2009 15:39

Get yourself to the docs flyme!

Just done a tesco shop for my armaggedon cupboard ... tins and anti-viral tissues. Am such an hysterical idiot.

Anyone for macaroni cheese and hot dog sausages?

LlamaFarmerKarmaHarmer · 29/04/2009 15:42

no the advice is NOT to get yourself to the doctors if you feel a bit unwell.

It is to ring NHS direct or go online and do their symptom checker.

The whole point at the moment is to prevent 8 million 'worried well' clogging up surgeries and using Tamiflu unnecessarily so that resources can be used by people (mostly at the moment only returning from Mexico) who may actually have swine flu.

Most people with sniffles do not have the flu but ringing NHS direct should be first port of call followed by phoning your own GP.

expatinscotland · 29/04/2009 15:49

We definitely need to stockpile here. But because the Somerfield is going to shut for 12 weeks next week and then all we'll have is a dinky Co-Op.

I usually keep tins and dried goods to hand just to spin a quick meal if necessary; extra loo roll and UHT milk in case I space and forget to pick some up because after 10PM, you can't get anything at all through here except alcohol in pubs.

wishingchair · 29/04/2009 16:43

Sorry llamafarmer!

scottishmummy · 29/04/2009 16:52

this is treatable with antivirals.talking it up into big ole panic is somewhat alarmist

a sniff or achey limbs does not equate to swine flu

southeastastra · 29/04/2009 16:53

exactly how many swines have died? quite worried about them

Flightattendant25 · 29/04/2009 17:01

I'm more worried about having to take tamiflu. Apparently it has awful side effects.

scottishmummy · 29/04/2009 17:03

worried why?Prescription only med prescribed if you are at risk.have you just got back from mexico?

Flightattendant25 · 29/04/2009 17:05

No, I'm an emetophobe and the thought of dying from flu is marginally more appealing than the idea of severe nausea/vomiting...

scottishmummy · 29/04/2009 17:09

well given that you are unlikely to be precribed tamiflu no cause for worry

Flightattendant25 · 29/04/2009 17:10

Yes lets hope it doesn't come to that. I tend to worry needlessly in advance of almost anything.

flymetothemoon · 29/04/2009 17:12

scottish - wasn't really thinking I've got swine flu.

Haven't been in contacy with anyone from Mexico. That said, give it a few days and the link will become less strong - i.e. if it spreads wider, it won't matter whether you've been sitting next to someone just back from a hols in Cancun or not as it might have spread into the wider community a little.

flymetothemoon · 29/04/2009 17:12

contact not contacy.

scottishmummy · 29/04/2009 17:12

well no point having predictive what if anxiety.

shit happens.you deal with it

flymetothemoon · 29/04/2009 17:20

I agree SM. I feel sorry for GP's as they must be getting inundated with the 'worried well' trying to wangle Tamiflu prescriptions etc.

scottishmummy · 29/04/2009 17:23

quite.for some any sniffle transmuted into virulent swine flu

rosalie12 · 29/04/2009 20:38

I have kept my son off school since Tuesday, have not had contact with anybody. How do we know how this virus will continue? I am v worried!!

expatinscotland · 29/04/2009 20:40

I really hope they are prudent with giving out that Tamiflu or they'll soon find themselves with a strain that's resistant.

southeastastra · 29/04/2009 20:40

this is hysteria at it's worst
