It starts of fairly innocently bemoaning taxpayers money going on what they see as council non-jobs
'They include trampoline coaches, skate park attendants, flower arrangers, a ?befriending co-ordinator? and a £15-an-hour yoga instructor. '

And then this
'One of the worst offending councils is Newcastle upon Tyne, which employs a dedicated ?breastfeeding peer support co-ordinator? ? separate from midwives who usually give mothers advice on how to feed ? and a ?composting supervisor? who earns a salary of up to £23,470 to run a facility that turns garden waste into compost. '

I was wondering when that would turn up on here

fishie · 21/04/2009 21:35

oh yes. i like that very well known non-job, sunday times journo.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 21/04/2009 21:35

Although I will make the following comment:
"separate from midwives who usually give mothers advice on how to feed"

Do they fuck.

TheCrackFox · 21/04/2009 21:43

Bloody hell!!!

I stopped long ago buying The Times because it is getting more tabloidy by the minute.

With the balls up that was BF with DS1 I would have chewed my right arm off for proper support. IMO the BF rates in the UK are so low because of no support and crap advice. Several billions need to be spent on maternity services and BF councellors but apparently 13% of our GDP was needed more to prop up corrupt banks.

JackBauer · 21/04/2009 21:44

My OP was actually twice as long but I deleted a rather large (badly mispelt in my rage) rant!

slightly that I only just read it. It take sme frigging ages to read the sunday papers!

But even leaving the BFing thing to one side, how can they say that recycling waste is a no-job in today's climate?
wankers.
Fucking arsehole shithead wankers.

I bought teh Times for the first time in ages as we were out for the day and when I suggested ot DH and his mate to get the Observer they both went 'The what?'

It was either that or the News of the Screws ffs.

at bfc

Also, oh yes, trampolines and skateboard parks - so much less worthy eploits than drugs, anti-social behaviour and obesity.

Am left with the feeling that the journo has never heard of the old prevention better than cure adage.

chequersmate · 21/04/2009 21:48

Sorry, b/f peer support co-ordinator, not bfc.

brimfull · 21/04/2009 21:52

there are loads of jobs that are a bloody waste imo

especially in the nhs

chequersmate · 21/04/2009 21:54

Me! I have a waste of space public sector job!

JackBauer · 21/04/2009 21:55

ggirl, I wouldn't argue with that but to pick these 2 jobs as the worst non-jobs in all the councils is a bit, well, shit really!

brimfull · 21/04/2009 21:56

yes I agree

Noonki · 21/04/2009 22:02

JulesJules · 21/04/2009 22:07

Stupid wanky journalist, now there is a non job.

HumphreyCobbler · 21/04/2009 22:07

The Times does seem to be very anti-breastfeeding.

JulesJules · 22/04/2009 08:55

Sorry, that should have been "stupid wanky journalists" - it took TWO of them to write that article

southeastastra · 22/04/2009 08:57

omg what's wrong with trampoline coaches and skate park attendants?

they'd probably think mine is one of those non-jobs too

southeastastra · 22/04/2009 08:58

is there a link to this online?

JulesJules · 22/04/2009 09:10

here

expatinscotland · 22/04/2009 09:15

Every one of those sounds much more valuable than over-paid, pen-pushing managerial position.

Tortington · 22/04/2009 09:25

AT seeing the title i was ready to agree ( i have witnessed some shite in the form of public money)

but can actually say that i don't think ( maybe the toothbrush advisor) are non jobs.

the toothbrush advisor is dodgy becuase it should be part of a pct programme i would assume?

i see nothing wrong in a street footballing coach.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 22/04/2009 09:30

These non-jobs appear to me to all contribute towards well-being.

Surely we want children to be encouraged to play football, go to skate parks? Surely we want the one in 3 people who live alone to have the chance of a be-friending service?

WTF

why the fuckity fuck do people think that health and well-being are somehow less important than anything.

JustCallMeGoat · 22/04/2009 09:33

personally i think being paid to vommit incoherent mental garbage onto a page and call it print journalism is more of a scandal.

expatinscotland · 22/04/2009 09:41

skateboard parks are a great idea, and they do need to have attendants on staff. they keep people off the streets and into doing something fun and healthier than getting drunk or high.

councils used to provide lots of low-cost ways to participate in sport and park wardens.

now they claim to have no money for these services but plenty for fancy new headquarters, free lunches for staff working at the headquarters, etc.
