juniperdewdrop · 23/04/2005 18:07

yes he was brilliant and such a gentleman.

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2005 18:13

I always knew that if it was a film with him in that I would enjoy it.

I have now seen most of them, some over and over again.

Hopefully they will

He always struck me as a true english gentleman and a devoted husband and father.

One of the few to die to make me sad. Really liked him as an actor. Hobson's choice when he finally stands up to his wife, then quickly looks for her approval. Brilliant. A great actor. The profession has lost one of it's best!

Moomin · 23/04/2005 19:02

It makes me cry just thinking about him, even when he was alive. The footage I saw in the last few years of him and his wife just epitomised what love and marriage can be all about; they were just devoted to one another. They renewed their vows quite recently and it was one of the most moving things about someone's relationship I've ever seen.

Such a lovely lovely person and a fabulous actor.

I would like to recommend his book STILL MEMORIES

AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN PHOTOGRAPHY

He had lots and lots of photos that he had taken over the years and they were found in boxes in the loft by their son and then put into the book

It is a truely beautiful book

here are the details of the book

sad but come on! 97!

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2005 21:08

Enid

I was just bumping it for those who may have come to their computers later in the evening

OK he was 97 but although he was blind he was still working acting in films 2 years ago.

Well IMHO that is pretty amazing,

so it is not as if he has been in a nursing home for last 20 or 30 years hidden away is it?

here are some details

IMHO I think he was a fantastic actor and much more of a film star than anyone of the hollywood "stars" of today.

Moomin · 23/04/2005 21:29

oh yeah, enid, sorry, I forgot that people who die aged 70+ should be bloody grateful for having lived at all and shouldn't expect anyone to actually reflect on and celebrate their lives. my mistake

gossiper · 23/04/2005 22:09

Actually he wasn't really such a gentleman. My FIL used to be good friends with him, and still was after he (FIL) divorced MIL. But when FIL married a black Bajan who JM thought was a gold digger (though she wasn't at all) JM cut him out of his social circle completely, and bad mouthed F & SMIL to a number of mutual friends

RTKangaMummy · 23/04/2005 22:34

Gossiper I have no idea who or what you are and I don't really care.

He must have thought him a gentleman beforehand otherwise why would your FIL socialise with him.

BUT IMHO he was a gentleman and there is no getting away from the fact that he was a fantastic actor.

And far more of a gentleman than any of the "movie stars" of today. IMHO

Anyway it is his acting that is the memory that most people will have of him and that was amazing

So you have your opinion and I have mine

John Mills - one of the all-time greats. Who can forget that brilliant scene in Ice Cold in Alex whene he drinks the pint of lager
