My DD is scared of everything, she saw the Poland/ NI riot on tv last night and has decided she's going to be in the riot police. Failing that a SWAT team leader

Bloody madness, harleyd.

MaureenMLove · 31/03/2009 20:09

I'll be policing the usual riot in the Science Department tomorrow!

YaddaYaddaYadda · 31/03/2009 20:44

Glad it's such a laugh for the rest of you, some of us will be going to work tomorrow in offices where the security staff on the main entrance will be wearing stab vests...

Marthasmama · 31/03/2009 20:47

I used to work in London and it was a nightmare when the May Day riots kicked off. Plus I worked for the government in a well known government building where the security was a bunch of old men with sticks. I do have sympathy YYY it's a PITA!

pastapestofor6 · 31/03/2009 20:47

wtf is going on..somebody tell me, I have just done a 36 hr shift and no nothing

Marthasmama · 31/03/2009 20:49

I think they are expecting trouble becuase of the G20 meeting thingy in London tomorrow.

Marthasmama · 31/03/2009 20:50

And I can't spell because

Haribosmummy · 31/03/2009 20:51

Pasta - it's the G20.

I feel for anyone who has to work in London.

I don't think it will be pretty at all. I know lots of people who've been told to dress casually (so as not to look like they work in the city) and to expect to be locked in during the day and I also know of security being brought in.

Sounds really quite scary.

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 31/03/2009 20:55

well, I may demand a muffin with menaces at the coffee shop tomorrow, after school!

I suspect nothing much will happpen.

harleyd · 31/03/2009 20:56

wasnt having a laugh..didnt know a thing about it tbh

NorkyButNice · 31/03/2009 20:57

DS goes to nursery in Canary Wharf and I'm quite worried about the next couple of days (along with DH working in the City).

We've had evacuation plans and security passwords sent home, along with police advice - it's not a joke for the staff or kids at nursery, never mind the other office workers.

MollyRogerslikeanEasterabbit · 31/03/2009 20:59

blimey! Sorry, I am northern and provincial and had no idea it was all so scary for you.

Haribosmummy · 31/03/2009 21:02

Norky - for your DS.

I hope I'm being a bit pessimistic, but I do think it's going to be nasty.

Lots of people have it in for 'city types' who they feel have caused this problem (totally untrue - they are partly to blame, but then so is EVERYONE who has taken out a loan for a flat screen TV / holiday / second home / massive mortgage they couldn't actually afford)

But, sadly, I do think it's going to be nasty.

smartiejake · 31/03/2009 21:03

DH works for a big American bank and they have been told to wear jeans and t-shirts this week so they are less obvious as workers in the city.

Mind you I'm not too worried- he normally gets to work at 7am so very unlikely to be any protesters there that early!

TheCrackFox · 31/03/2009 21:09

When they had the G8 thing in Edinburgh a couple of years ago the standard of rioting was piss poor. DH actually saw one the rioters burst out crying when he got arrested. There seemed to be more journos and photographers than rioters.

poppy34 · 31/03/2009 21:14

although i did giggle at some comments on here but it is no joke - have been locked in during may day riots and watched rioters/police charging up and down outside, people protesting about various stuff and its not a joke (esp for the poor security blokes).

And totally agree haribosmummy re who is to blame.

MollieO · 31/03/2009 21:41

We've had detailed advice issued from the City of London police. Our building is very central in the City and has big iron gates that will be locked. One entrance in out and of the building and extra security staff. No visitors allowed, recommended that we don't venture out lunch time and dress down. I was in London when the riots kicked off 10 years ago and it was really really scary. I've taken the rest of this week off.

Friends who live near Excel have been issued with passes so they can get to their homes.

I really do not understand why our esteemed leader has chosen to organise this type of event in an area that would be likely attract the nutters who are protesting tomorrow. Whilst some will be peaceful there is a real worry that many are planning serious trouble.
