they say it will help predict climate change, help to understand tides etc (and I am sure I read something somewhere about the bermuda triangle!)

Knowing is one thing, but how does it help to know more about climate change, unless governments are willing to ensure changes are made?

If indeed changes can be made and it's not just the natural cycle of this planet, which is headed into its umpteenth ice age?

well it will give us more data, which is helpful.
