Have just seen This and am now crying my eyes out aftre watching the video.

I can't even begin to imagine how it must feel to know you may never see your kids again just on someone's say so...

Surely there must be something that can be done about this? She is British our government do something?

Monkeytrousers - I'm crying again now after reading that link.

And it turns out that daddy is the one having the affair talk about salt in the wound.

Simplysally · 11/03/2009 14:30

The children are likely to have dual-citizenship but the UK courts can't automatically override the rights of the Dubai courts wrt to specifying custody.

I would have thought that the male friend could give testimony that it was above board which might have some bearing (a woman's word probably doesn't count) but if he is English it may not.

themoon66 · 11/03/2009 14:34

sally - i read that the male friend she was with wasn't even contacted by the police. It all stinks.

Divineintervention · 11/03/2009 14:35

What sort of country has laws that allow such disgusting situations happen? It's completely fucked up.
I am going to donate to their plight on Friday when I get paid.

wannaBe · 11/03/2009 14:42

would they have dual citizenship though? If they were born in dubai the mother could apply for them to have british passports but this might not automatically be the case. Also it might depend on the laws in dubai wrt holding two passports - some countries do not allow their citizens to hold additional passports but not sure whether Dubai is one of them.

I wonder how common this is. I know that in some muslim countries custody is automatically awarded to the father and that the mother loses all rights upon divorce.

Am still not sure what the British government should be doing though, or whether they should be interfeering at all. After all if this was a father from a less libral country fighting for custody of his children in this country would we welcome the interfeerence of his country's government to try to apply their laws here?

goodnightmoon · 11/03/2009 14:49

it's not just in the Middle East. British courts can prevent a foreign-born mother from taking her children with a Brit back to her home country.

Monkeytrousers1 · 11/03/2009 14:59

A father from a less liberal country wouldn;t have to Wannabe. The mother would lose custosy anyway.

If the mother took the children from him and managed to escape - this woman was hunted by police - then the children would be more likely snatched and taken back to the less liberal country and so the cycle starts again.

StercusAccidit · 11/03/2009 15:08

Just went on FB to post this to everyone i know .. how terrible.
One of the people i have posted to will probably reply he's a human rights lawyer, but i doubt anything can be done other than if someone takes pity on those children and does whats right, or she kidnaps them back. How very sad.
I cried hearing those poor kiddies begging to be with their mummy. Any decent father would have relented.
Or at least offered to share custody..

mamadiva · 11/03/2009 15:10

Have they lived in Dubai there whole lives though? The little boy has a very strong English accent, I just assumed they had moved there at some point.

I think no matter where it is if these types of ciircumstances and breeches of human rights are occurring I would'nt care who butted in.

mamadiva · 11/03/2009 15:12

Also meant to say am a bit shocked by Marnie's statement

I know only she knows how much those kids and their father love each other but what he's done ha seriously made me wonder if he actually cares about them at all or just wants to use them in his sick little ploy.

Hulababy · 11/03/2009 15:25

Awful awful video. I couldn't watch it all.

How can the father listen to his babies sobbing heartbreakingly for their mummy and let it happen? What kind of man is he? How could he hurt his children so bad? If he really truely loves them and adores them (as said int he statement) - why would he want to hurt them, and give them this heartbreaking memories and scars for life?

I doubt they will thank him for it when they grow up. TBH I hope they grow up and are able to tell him exactly what type of man he really is in being able to do this to his own children.

The poor poor babies

wannaBe · 11/03/2009 15:33

The thing is, they are going to grow up in a country and in a family that condones this kind of behavior.

IMO there are two issues really.

The first is the issue of her being detained for having committed adultery and having been thrown in jail. Surely fair trials abroad or similar need to be involved in this, with the aim of getting her out of jail as quickly as possible, and something needs to be tried to put off the deportation at least so that action can be taken wrt her children. But only once she is out of prison can she begin to fight for her children, and then only if she is allowed to remain in the country.

I think the awareness needs to be of her current situation, ie the fact that she has been detained for adultery and is due to be deported without her children as soon as she is released rather than of the custody issue at the moment iyswim.

Maybe the media needs to become more involved. This morning/bbc/any other paper that carries these types of stories, which will also be a warning to other women considering moving to these types of countries.

And fair trials abroad/amnesty international. And the more publicity the case gets, the more likely one of these organizations will become publically involved.

completelyabsolutely · 11/03/2009 16:48

I actually feel really ill after watching that video and just want to finish work so I can give my dd a huge cuddle.

Can anyone come up with a good kind of standard letter to send out - I am rubbish at writing these things but would like to send something off to as many people as possible.

Divineintervention · 11/03/2009 17:19

BUMP....everyone should write a letter of support, it is the very least we can all do.

edam · 11/03/2009 17:35

oh, those poor children. Her husband must be a self-centred, evil swine.

I thought from one of those links that Amnesty were involved and had taken her case up as a prisoner of conscience? Hope that's the case.

Divineintervention · 11/03/2009 18:44

and again...

wannaBe · 11/03/2009 18:54

tbh I think this needs a new thread or new thread title.

And perhaps for it to not be in the news as lots of people hide this topic.thread title along the lines of:

A british mum is going to be deported from Dubai without her children if something isn't done."

And perhaps asking people to email as many of the press/use their contacts in the media etc as possible to raise awareness of this if nothing else...

desertgirl · 11/03/2009 19:31

have a look at these comments from Dubai

Monkeytrousers1 · 11/03/2009 20:22

Wannabe - there is a new thread, a support thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/in_the_news/719577-Justice-for-Marnie-Pearce-links-to-support-sites?msgid=14671 218#14671218 here

I have never watched anything so distressing in my life . How can that exh look himself in teh mirror. That poor poor woman. What on earth can we do to help?

mamadiva · 11/03/2009 21:08

New thread!

OP posts:
desertgirl · 12/03/2009 03:36

Squiggly, come on, she lives in Dubai - even locals are aware that what she is wearing is not that shocking (by contrast to the few expats and tourists who really don't get it)

barbie1 · 12/03/2009 04:24

squiggly i moved to dubai a few months back and feared the worse as i have heard so many tales of british women being stared at ect...however so far i have dressed pretty much as i want, headscarfs arent the law here. Dubai is made up with 95% expats mainly british, australian and americans. The locals are pretty much in favour of expats as we are currently the ones keeping the country afloat apart from a huge loan from another state. Yes there are rules to be followed however by wearing western clothes she isnt breaking any of them!
Most emirates turn a blind eye to the rules that them themselves have made up because they now see that they are unrealistic. There are hundreds of people living here unmarried (which is against the law) yet the landlords are emirates and turn a blind eye for the money.

The lady in question has done nothing wrong apart from falling in love with a muslim who unfortuanly has local law on his side. There is a huge public outcry over here and many expats are trying to help this poor lady and more importantly her darling children.

MarmadukeScarlet · 12/03/2009 07:22

Actually, Squiggly, if you watch the video she does have a long black scarf, but it has come off in the chaos. The woman in the blue (from memory, no desire to watch the clip again to check) ends up holding it. But even without a scarf the outfit is not that shocking.
