I don't think it's necessarily indefensible tbh. That's showbiz, all about how well their agents negotiate and how vital each person involved is perceived to be to the programme/channel in question.

Presumably Philip has a great agent and presumably ITV feel he is more likely to pull in viewers in their target demographic than Fern is.

It's like when celebs go in the jungle or whatever, they all negotiate their fee and some get much more than others.

Philip has been a sucessful TV presenter for longer than Fern, and is better known.
