Ah, but Hamas claim they were'nt hiding in the cities and that the Israelis were firing on innocent civilians.

Honestly, I don't know who to believe.

However, I do believe press coverage of the situation is extremely anti-Israeli, for some strange reason.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 02/02/2009 10:27

Because Hamas were and are very busy harming their own people and defending their democracy

I wish Israel would lift border blockades and allow Gaza to flourish. It's quite wrong not to let people live a decent life and it would benefit Israel too. Then thugs like Hamas wouldn't even get a look in. But it's going to take so long to even begin to establish farming again never mind being able to sell their produce.

If Israel lifts the blockade, how long till the first suicide bomber strikes?

I'd give it a day.

Donk · 03/02/2009 14:23

Hi Bubble!
Maybe so - but the blockade is also punishing many innocent people, and in itself the resulting poor conditions will radicalise the population and lead to more violence. No, I don't know what the answer is - but if the idea is to break the cycle/spiral of violence, then (essentially) confining the population of Gaza in a prison and letting them starve slowly (the malnutrition of the children is well documented) is neither just nor ethical, nor the answer.

I'm sorry,I don't understand what the connection is between the New Scientist article the OP posted and the Guardian one about Hamas reprisals?

Are you saying that Hamas destroyed the farms ItsGrim? Becuase that doesn't appear to be what the Guardian article is saying.

Donk · 03/02/2009 20:38

Indeed HBLB, none of the other posts refer to the New Scientist article about the widespread destruction of farms and agriculture.

There can be only one reason that farms and agriculture were destroyed so completely and that is that the IDF deliberately targetted anything that they considered to be the infrastructure of gaza - including schools, hospitals and agriculture. This has nothing to do with hamas!
