I didn't think it possible that he could receive hate mail

This fear that evangelists have of evolution is incredible.
A lot of scientists are actually profoundly religious, it's not necessary a contradiction to believe in a scientifically proven evolution of the earth and a Creator.

Regardless of that debate, surely someone should tell those fundamentalists that THEY're the ones that will end up in Hell? After all the Gospels clearly state that one should love one's enemies, not judge others, and that pride is a capital sin... By that logic there won't be many evangelists in Heaven.

It's unbelievable that anyone could send him hate mail! He's fantastic (I met him once and he is as gentlemanly and charming in real life as on telly).

I'm RC but distrust any fundamentalist attitude to religion or politics. Don't see religion or science as mutually exclusive actually. Think it's just as irrational to believe in sudden big bang out of nowhere as it is to believe in all-powerful deity creating big bang iyswim!! Both positions are pretty mind-boggling if you think about it....

The minute someone tries to impose their views on someone else (particularly by such dubious methods as this) they completely undermine their own argument.
