That it was actually the Conservative Gvt who put hospital cleaning out to private contractors working to administrators rather than ward staff?

and that it was the Conservative gvt which introduced 'care in the community' (with ref to 'how would you feel if your daughter was attacked...)?

saw the famous liverpudlian sense of humour in action yesterday - on the how hard is it to keep a hospital clean poster, someone had scrawled out hospital and replaced it with ahem bell-end.

Aye, true Blu. But aren't you even the slightest bit disappointed that Labour have ignored the problem too for the last 7 years?

It's a bit like the whole Jamie's Dinners hoohah when Tony Blair said it's been a project after his own heart for the last few years. It is? So why have you done f-all about it then, Tone?

Oh god of course it was. And cutting back on school dinners began in 1980, almost the minute la Thatch got in, FFS! But I suppose in the great scheme of things, mopping hospital bed wheels and peeling carrots comes a long way down the list when you're righting the wrongs of 18 years of blah blah blah.

The cheek the Tories are capable of never ceases to amaze me - even when they were there at the time they say it's nothing to do with them

my mother waxes lyrically on anti Thatcher school milk and meals, she also detests Jamie oliver saying that it was the effing Torys who screwed up what was a plain and nourishing if not always desirously palatable school meals servie that was the envy of the modern world
I wasn't politically aware at the time being young, so not sure if she is totally right but knowing Thatcher as I do from more recent times, I believe it probably is!
My mum ironically used to nanny for the Crothalls (hospital cleaning company owners) in New ZEaland and they WERE RICH as F**K
made her rant on EVEN more if that was possible, I have actually seen her throw pans of food at the TV when Thatcher was on and more lately Kilroy...

the minute Thatch got her leg in the no 10 door of course!
We were living in NZ, she read papers, I rode horses, but honestly dinner time in front of the news was not recommended!
I only picked up interest after the miners strike as that sent my mum almost apoplectic with rage.
I am making up for lost time though, dd (2) knows that Michael Howard is "duffer" and Thatch is "bad girl" and George Bush ... well she just runs and hits the tv screen

You know, I'd like to know when exactly these halycon days of clean hospitals are supposed to have been. When I had ds1 in the 70's I lay in the same blood-stained sheets for five days. And when I worked in the same hospital there were cockroaches and pharoah ants a-plenty. As for the mice and pigeons in the kitchens... I think the view that hospitals were beacons of cleanliness and hygiene are somewhat rose-tinted!! They've always been filthy places.

IME they were definitely cleaner in the 80s than in the 90s - at least in terms of how often (and how early) women with mops and buckets came crashing round and banged into your bed

Oh god, weren't the mops and buckets just awful?? And now they have those machine thingies which whirr away like mad. And rubbish-bag holders that go CLANG every time someone puts something in.

OMG, ladies! I have the MOST embarrassing confession!! I went out w/this man for 5 minutes. He told me he was 'old-fashioned' (read: misogynist) and Tory and I left skidmarks. Well, a mutual acquaintance sent me a link to a website this bloke had set up: in support of Kilroy! I wanted to jump in the shower and scrub my skin off - I let him put his arm around me. Eeeewwwww!

Expat - 5 minutes - lol!!

In the interests of unbiased reporting, it should be noted that the reason Thatcher removed the school dinners service was because of the massive swingeing cuts in the school meals budget which had recently been implemented by Jim 'Crisis-what-crisis??' Callaghan's Govt. Just a snippet I read in 'Sunny Jim's' obit last week - not a lot of people know that!
