£91 million for a footballer

surely no player is worth that much.
People are being laid off, having their homes repossesed, and a football club owner wants to pay that much for someone to kick a football.

It sounds daft if you simplify like that but it's just business and he is a commodity. He is worth whatever the highest bidder is prepared to pay and the club will easily recoup their outlay.

megcleary · 15/01/2009 21:28

appaerntly is gone uo to £102 million

Doodle2U · 15/01/2009 21:30

The billionaire that bought City has more money than sense and this is lose change to him.

A life long City supporter, I'm feeling ever so slightly rocked by this bloke buying us. See, when we were poor, we won barely anything and everyone loved us coz we were no threat - so no pressure!

Now we are rich, everyone is expecting GREAT things and if/when we fall on our arses, the humiliation is going to be even greater.

WilfSell · 15/01/2009 21:30

The owners are oil magnates who makes millions of pounds a second. They couldn't give a hoot about the financial situation in the UK.

But yes, it is somewhat 'fictional' and obscene.

Nevertheless, as a lifelong sufferer Man City supporter, I wouldn't care if they put in a bid for Jesus at the moment.

lOOse

WilfSell · 15/01/2009 21:32

Now now Doodle, enough with the entrenched negativity.

Doodle2U · 15/01/2009 21:37

I know, I know....

I remember being at a match against Crystal palace years ago and their fans were chanting "Going down, going down, going down..." and the next thing I knew, all the City fans around me were chanting "So are we, so are we, so are we..." - Lovely!

My DS asked 2Why are we City fans? Everyone in my class supports United." I said "Because City fans have the best sense of humour. It's vital!"

feedthegoat · 15/01/2009 21:39

Lets be honest, the money isn't exactly helping us at the minute!

Lilyloo · 15/01/2009 21:41

Lol i had to think lng and hard before we put ds through the trauma of being a city supporter!!!

Quite a cheap name for his shirt though!!

feedthegoat · 15/01/2009 21:44

It's going to start a barrell load of jokes about our performances with that name though...... Tbh i'm more worried we might sign Craig Bellamy

Lilyloo · 15/01/2009 21:45

feedthegoat is your name in reference to Shaun ??

fryalot · 15/01/2009 21:46

Doodle - I was at that match!

Well, I think it was that one, there were a few where we were in imminent danger of going down!

Apparently, he's very religious and money is absolutely not an issue for him.

I did think that if they want, they can pay me the £90 million (or £100 million or whatever it's up to now) and I'll make sure our parish council name the church after him.

I do worry that, now everyone knows that city are the richest club in the world with all these untold millions to play with, that no club is ever going to accept an offer for any player, they will all make us go back with a higher offer again and again (a-la Craig Bellamy...)

feedthegoat · 15/01/2009 21:48

Lilyloo - of course . I was one of people on train back from wembley singing 'shaun goater, superstar.....'

mayorquimby · 16/01/2009 00:00

up to nearly 110 million. neer understood the whole "paying that much to kick a football" argument. surely right up there with the "that much to sing/act/anythin not absolutely necessary"
it's a business that operates in a free market.the players are worth what people are willing to pay for them.and if he were to transform city into a champions league team (please never never never let this happen) he'd have repaid his transfer fee in 2 years.
now the half a million a week salary he's been offered if accepted might add a couple of years to repaying that debt

nancy75 · 16/01/2009 00:05

agree with you mayorquimby, i dont get whole how can a footballer be worth x when a nurse is only worth y debate. if man city dont but kaka it doesnt mean people will be able to keep their jobs or homes, there is no connection between the 2. How much tax will he pay on half a million a week? - i bet gordon brown is praying he signs up, he could be the answer to our national debt!
