and Royal Doulton.

I'm shocked. I know we have lost Spode and lots of smaller potteries and production has moved to Indonesia but I never thought the entire brand of Wedgewood and Doulton would go.

I'd best check if I need any more of my dinner service before it becomes impossible to get.

I wonder if we can still be called the Potteries when all the potbanks have gone?

morningpaper · 05/01/2009 22:05

This isn't surprising REALLY is it?

Surely there is very little need for this sort of thing?

scrooged · 05/01/2009 22:14

It's all made in China now.

Its Wedgwood without the e by the way [Potteries pedant emotion]

scrooged · 05/01/2009 22:18

Ah well. I didn't claim I could spell.

No, it's not surprising.

But it's more devastating news for the local area/economy, and it's quite sad that a company that has been going for 250 years is in this situation. The original Mr Wedgwood was quite innovative in his day.

Islands I'm [shocked] that you spelt Wedgwood wrong!

islandofsodor · 05/01/2009 22:29

It's one of those blip words that I never get right. Believe is another.

And as for there not being a need for fine china, well, we don;t need lots of things in life do we. But it's very sad that the skills are going to disappear and the very famous name.

ONe of the houses at my school was named Wedgwood, they and Doulton just ARE Stoke, its our heritage and now all our kids are going to know is in a museum visit to Gladstone.

unknownrebelbang · 05/01/2009 22:36

Only teasing.

I think we had Wedgwood (blue of course, natch), Doulton, Spode and Minton, but I could be wrong, twas a long time ago.

Gladstone is an excellent museum, spent many a happy hour there when it used to cost 20p a visit.

I do think it sad that there is nothing left of our local industry.

islandofsodor · 05/01/2009 22:38

We had Wedgwood (I'm trying to spell it right),Bennett, (that was me) Mitchell and I can't remember the 4th, maybe it was Spode.
