I don't know if he's a stupid man that made a stupid mistake
OR negligent parent and deserves all he gets.
A very sad story though.

I personally wouldnt have done it, but is he suffering enough or will spending the rest of his life in jail be an appropriate sentance?

Impossible to judge without knowing the full story.

pantomimEDAMe · 31/12/2008 10:05

Guardian story says his adult passenger has tried to blame the poor bloody mother, saying: 'We thought the children were going to meet up with their mother. Where was she? How were we supposed to know she wasn't coming?"

IMO the passenger should be on trial too. Unbelievable.

whomovedmychocolate · 31/12/2008 10:05

Oh those poor children

But I'm not sure whether he knew how dangerous it is to let kids walk in snow. I was listening to the radio the other day and apparently about ten babies die every ski season when parents put them in backpacks and they freeze to death without the parents noticing. It can happen very quickly.

cocolepew · 31/12/2008 10:07

How awful

Tortington · 31/12/2008 10:08

only an insane person, would make an 11 year old walk ten miles full stop.

pantomimEDAMe · 31/12/2008 10:11

He lives in Idaho. It's not like he'd never seen snow before. Anyone with the intelligence of an amoeba knows you don't throw kids out and make them walk 10 miles through snowdrifts on their own, wearing pyjama bottoms, ffs.

belgo · 31/12/2008 10:12

Oh. Missed the bit about the pjamas.
Very easy to judge in those circumstances then.

shinyshoes · 31/12/2008 10:16

What gets me is after the truck was freed, he drove back home, he didn't check to see if the kids were OK.

anyone can make bad judgements but why didn't he just free the truck and turn round and take them back home?
imo he deserves everything he gets

those poor children

Just to rectify: walking in snow is not dangerous per se: Scandinavian children do that every day. And they play out unsupervised in the snow every day. But 27 degrees is far too cold to let a child out unsupervised and 10 miles is too far for a child to walk unsupervised. It was those two factors that killed the child: not the fact that there was snow on the ground. Snow itself is not a killer.

duchesse · 05/01/2009 15:48

Honestly that dad seems more flakey than abusive. He must be suffering a lot.

mm22bys · 07/01/2009 09:07

Stupid idiot "father". If he was not prepared to walk through the snow with them he should have just taken them back to his house with them. And suffered any subsequent "consequences" if the mother kicked up a stink about "access".

Some people are just idiots and don't deserve to be parents, or at least make sure they get to where they are supposed to get, and make sure they are properly prepared (clothes, phone, hot drinks etc etc etc).

Sorry but when you hear stories like what happened to John Travolta's son, these stories make me so cross and he deserves what he gets, and I feel so sorry for their mother...

lisalisa · 07/01/2009 09:10

Why John TRravlota's son? Why does he deserve it?

mm22bys · 07/01/2009 09:11

The passenger has been charged too.

I meant the "father", he deserves a long jail sentence.

Not John Travolta! Never!
