absolute madness, the compensation was awarded before the decision was made to let him return to his job!

Don't get me wrong, I think it would be awful to lose a thumb, but it's something that I can imagine is fairly straightforward to learn to live with, still leaves you with a lot of options (and earnings potential) for your life.

But his injuries are going to massively affect him for the rest of his life

There seem to be some very arcane rules about how compensation is decided for servicepeople.
