MN and Moldie spat apparently merits billing between Gazan civilians being killed by the hundred by Israeli missiles, and world hunger

Another disproportionate response?

Jeez, some people need to get some RL-friends.

SoupDragon · 29/12/2008 09:04

"Oh and the moldie who leaked it."

Oh FGS!

All this has shown is that a lot of people need to get a grip and grow up.

ScottishMummy · 29/12/2008 12:18

one cannot leak what was already in the public domain, openly discussed

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/12/2008 13:35

I am not ashamed or embarassed, I dont think I ever got too heated re the topic, I did get my knickers in a twist at the implication that the moldies deserved a new place due to all their advice and laughs (as that implied nobody else gave any which irritated me).
The reasons I am annoyed are as follows:
a) its really utterly despicable that when there is such sad, horrible stuff going off in the world, that a little spat makes front page news
b) the mis-representation of the situation, the inability to get posters names correct, the way the DM states the board was set up to talk about older children (as if mumsnetters only talk about nappies and feeding).
Jesus. If I knew how crap you could be to get away with being a journalist, I never would have gone into my line of work and I'd be looking at the internet for my next scoop

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 29/12/2008 13:48

I posted a comment on the mail article saying it was lazy journalism and had completely misquoted, guess what...... it appears to have been moderated.

smallorange · 29/12/2008 13:59

I worked in newspapers a long time and to be honest this is a silly season story, not taken at all seriously by those in charge. It probably wouldn't have been used at all if it wasn't Christmas time when they are scrabbling around for stuff to fill the paper.

No one on that thread acquitted themselves very well and I think the papers thought you were fair game for a bit of a drubbing. It's a bit rich to complain about being misquoted considering some of the stuff that was said about people on that thread and everyone's bahviour in general.

This isn't what people want to hear tho so I'm going to forget about mumsnet for a bit as am starting to post about a row that I have absoloutely no interest in - and will just make enemies.

Sometimes I see something on TV ( like The Wright Stuff, I know ) and they have a discussion about something that has just been discussed on MN, the same with newspapers. So a lot of journos and researchers read MN it would appear.

oh God I'm back. I agree with you, Dittany, the tone was awful and it was badly written. I don't know how they managed to get so much wrong when it is written down on the thread for all to see.

But....it ain't Gaza and that's the whole point. Really it doesn't matter. That's it.

Am really going now... am having two weeks off.

thumbwitch · 29/12/2008 16:13

oh nice to see the torygraph writers are able to do their own research and get a more informed and accurate picture of the whole situation, rather than just copying reading the DM and re-hashing the shite stuff they wrote.

Aitch · 29/12/2008 17:05

they didn't thumby. two of those quotes were mine...

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/12/2008 19:37

what is annoying me is that I have tried to post three comments onto the DM site and it keeps being refused.
Have just tried again, no doubt it will not be there.
Sodding wanky DM.

(Which reminds me of a joke on Big Fat Quiz Of The Year re the whole Ross/Brand debate and how the "daily mail had to get a bigger bandwagon to cope" )

MrsMerryHenry · 29/12/2008 20:19

I've been quoted in the Torygraph. But it wasn't even my words! My god, is there no journalist in this country who actually knows how to do their job? (Let's see if they quote that in tomorrow's paper! )

DoNotsAntlers · 29/12/2008 20:29

I know...and apparently the "Moldies" is an 2invitation only area (implying that it is actually part of MN).

Come on then ladies....can anyone write them a sensible and accurate article for them to print tomorrow

ScottishMummy · 29/12/2008 20:41

an alternative cheerier interpretation is MN is open access, all welcome, nae bouncers, convivial chat

thumbwitch · 29/12/2008 21:11

dammit, forgot to add the to my post to indicate extreme sarcasm!

theinsider · 29/12/2008 21:33

I too was attributed a quote which wasn't mine (one of Aitch's apparently).

I must admit to being quite at seeing my name, albeit only MN one,in the Telegraph. Christ, if they're interested in and reporting what they think I've got to say then this country's really going to the dogs

Maybe I should ring Gordon and see if he'd like views. Actually could you imagine Government By Mumsnet?

By GordontheGopher "AIBU to sanction the invasion of a middle-eastern country with lots of oil reserves?"

MrsMerryHenry · 29/12/2008 22:09

I'd very much welcome government by mumsnet - we'd do a far better job than old Gordy!

thumbwitch - don't worry, your sarcasm came across loud and clear!

This whole newspaper reporting nonsense has reminded me of a fact of life which I'd forgotten: any time a journo reports a story which you know well you'll find it's riddled with inaccuracies and lazy ass-umptions. I've had friends endorse this fact from their own experience, too.

Since this is so often the case, what does it say about the state of journalism and how we should regard what we read?

ScottishMummy · 29/12/2008 22:21

cycling christ government by MN!death penalty for punctuation errors, deportation for bugaboo owners,up against a wall for moldies

bless,i enjoy MN ribaldry but nah to MN law.too scary for me

NotanOtter · 29/12/2008 22:35

the torygraph one is a far better read ....

still makes us look petty but slightly less so

EBenes · 29/12/2008 22:41

"That juxtaposition just shows how morally and editorially impoverished the IoS is now. "

I think, to be fair, it's no different from mumsnet having concurrent threads about Strictly and children's names and children's illnesses and Gaza, and people posting on each of these within the same 10 minute period. It's clear the article is just a joke, designed to laugh at internet geeks with the added bonus of laughing at a bunch of adult women behaving like schoolgirls, but it's not supposed to be serious or 'newsworthy' in the same way - it's supposed to be enjoyable to read. Newspapers run headline news on the front page, but also habitually flash the lighter news or shopping offers or famous chef recipes featured inside on the cover, it's not actually bad journalism. I would be annoyed if I'd been misquoted, because it would be me, but they're not naming real people, so they probably don't care about messing up the quotes.
