Bangladeshi court frees woman after UK court ruling.

This must be VERY good news for all women forced into marriage by their families - especially as she isn't a British Citizen but the UK played its part. Thank heavens!

Im glad that she is free, must have been so frightening for her.

edam · 15/12/2008 10:27

Scary that they can try this with someone who is in her 30s, for heaven's sake.

The parents used the fact that she was friends with a Hindi man as evidence of her mental instability.

Call me cynical but it's worth remembering that as a doctor, she has great worth it the UK. Money has been invested in her training and as a Bengali speaker she has grat value in the East End of London. I've worked in that community for a long time. Many girls are sacraficed on the alter of 'traditional values'.

yes this was good news. afraid sshe is the exception though.

I'm sure she is an exception, but hopefully this is the start of something very important.

Parents' argument about mental instability is horrifying.

Also, in this case her cousin alerted UK authorities to her plight and was advocating for her, which must have been critical.

I hope so too, edam.

edam · 15/12/2008 12:06

Cousin deserves a round of applause, then!

Hmm. Stories now saying "friends" when earlier said "cousin". Good for whoever did do it, anyway.
