My DP went to the openeing of the Ikea store in Edmonton, North London. The crowds were so big that they ended up knocking the perimeter fence over in their haste to get to the cheap rugs. DP said it was one of the most frightening experiences of his life (and DP has been a motorbike courier for years-so quite well up on hair raising experiences.)

Just saw this on the Guardian site. Dreadful beyond belief.

oops sorry for typo, meant opening

hecate · 29/11/2008 16:34

yes. some people are.

doesn't it remind you of starving, wild animals fighting over food?

mamalovesmojitos · 29/11/2008 16:48

yes it does. and you know i remember seeing an aid worker on television talking about reaching the most starving people in ethiopia.

he said that everybody waited their turn for food, queued up politely, waited patiently. fgs were any of these people in wallmart starving? eh..no.

how can they live with themselves. i would not be able to push someone out of my way no matter how much of a rush i was in.

remember the Edmonton Ikea riot?

onager · 29/11/2008 17:05

Sales, Football matches and Religious events. Not so much the latter here, but I'm always reading about stampedes in India that kill 100s. You'd think people would act better wouldn't you.

It's just so depressing. This sort of thing happens all the time - my friend was on a tube when there was a panic and people got pushed over and had footprints on them.

I mean FFS what's wrong with us?

TwoIfBySea · 02/12/2008 15:09

There was the IKEA riot and also that crush that happened when that Primark opened in London. Looking at all three situations (and I bet there have been more) they are depressingly familiar, the photos could all be from the one event. It is a sad state of affairs when people are willing to behave like that just to save a few pounds/dollars on "stuff".

Like mamaloves says, it isn't like this is food for the starving...it is just "stuff".

I feel for that poor man who was killed, and his family - how do you cope knowing that is how your loved one died?
