I work for Woollies. We have been promised we will be paid on Friday. Don't know about next month after working extra hours over Christmas though (that's if we stay open).

I think we should put in a mumsnet bid. £1 should do it.

Sounds like we already have 2 mumsnetters we could approach to be board members....

Where else am I going to buy Powerrangers if its not kept going?

jeanjeannie · 27/11/2008 10:26

According to Radio 4 this morning there are quite a few serious enquiries into buying it.

SIL works for a venture capital company and they're running round like loons putting together a proposal.

I'd chuck in a £1 - but only if I can be in charge of Mix 'n Mix

No one wants to save MFI then?

mypandasgotcrabs · 27/11/2008 10:26

We were assured on Tuesday that we would be paid. Our area manager also came into our store yesterday to offer reassurances.

dragon, do you work in a smaller store? If so, you're probably going to be ok.

Okay, I now have no chance of getting that Belling Foldaway Kitchen then.

On a more serious note, sorry for those who are facing such uncertainty esp. at this time of year.

lynniep · 27/11/2008 12:30

Looks like it will close just after christmas. The website is already substantially reduced in size(no toys anymore)

I'm absolutley gutted about Woolies - gutted for the people who will lose their jobs, and selfishly for me because I love Woolies and can't imagine there not being one anywhere. Its one of those shops that has always been around, and the high street won't be the same without it, and not in a good way.

I'll even miss the young lad in our local store (Huntingdon) who is probably the most cheerful teenager I've ever met in my life (although he may not be a teen - in my advanced years I can't tell anymore) I don't think it'll take him long to find more work.

Its so sad and desperate the way things are going. I'm so lucky to still have a job (fingers crossed that will not change)

MuchLessTiredNow · 27/11/2008 12:33

these are horrid times.... I have just lost my job too and wouldn't wish it on anyone. good luck to the woolies staff

jeanjeannie · 27/11/2008 12:57

Yes, I meant to add - I really hope there is a happy ending to all this. I've also experienced redundancy several times and it's frightening.

I use Woolies a lot and it's so sad. My mum was a manager of a Woolies store for 20 years..starting back in the late 40s...she's very upset about it. Fingers crossed for all those staff.

CatIsSleepy · 27/11/2008 12:58

aww am going to miss woolies

Lilyloo · 27/11/2008 13:01

Have just been to our local one. It's only small but always busy. A lady was in there asking if the vouchers she had bought her granchildren for xmas would still be valid.
The assistant said they are still trading as normal up to xmas as far as she knows but to keep an eye on the news.
I think i would have spent them it doesn't look good. I just used up some i got for my birthday.

Another big woolies fan here and the trio love going in as we have about 3 locally.

mypandasgotcrabs · 27/11/2008 13:34

You can still spend vouchers, but will get the change in cash.

IllegallyBrunette · 27/11/2008 13:36

Our local one is still open today. Staff were on the doors giving out 20% off vouchers.

I got a pre lit xmas tree for £28 but I felt really guilty getting it cheaper

cheesesarnie · 27/11/2008 13:40

i think its awful.i feel sad for every one that will lose jobs but also sad because its been around for so long.

stealthsquiggle · 27/11/2008 13:42

Whilst feeling bad for their employees, from a purely selfish point of view I desperately need to find time to go and spend DS's birthday token with/for him while they are still trading.

Radio 4 was saying this morning that wages (due tomorrow, I believe) have been guaranteed.
