Take a chill-pill.

sansouci · 18/03/2005 21:42

Yeeeee-HAH! I actually killed the thread!

JoolsToo · 18/03/2005 23:25

nay lass!

actually this one is better off dead!

suedonim · 18/03/2005 23:27

Can I revive it??

I was talking to ds1, who lives in LA and is studying history at uni there, about this thread tonight. His perception of the Irish/Polish/PlanetZog-American thing is that it's more prevalent on the east coast than the west, which he puts down to almost everyone in S Ca. being a relative newcomer. He wonders whether the civil rights movement of the 60's sharpened people's awareness and pride in their ancestry and also caused them to see it as a way of reclaiming their heritage and thumbing their noses at the WASP image. I'll be interested to see your thoughts and get ds's reaction to them.

PS He thinks US supermarkets are rubbish - no dolly mixtures, no marmite, no hulahoops or potato sticks and no Creme Eggs. I've just had to send a Red Cross parcel to keep him from starving to death, poor lad!

JoolsToo · 18/03/2005 23:35

A lot of descendants of immigrants to the UK hang onto their cultures with a passion in fact we actively encourage them to do so. Even if they're born and bred here when it comes to England v whoever in the cricket its not England they support

I'm not really a fan of those teenies pageants either

Heathcliffscathy · 18/03/2005 23:40

sofia and uwila, i'm sorry, but i totally disagree that this is about bashing...talking about america without talking about it's current status (most powerful country on the planet) and stance ('warmongering' may be a forceful phrase, but you can't dispute that the current policy is to wage war on any country that is politically/militarily/economically important but isn't 'online' with a neo-conservative version of democracy) would be totally facile. i don't believe that of you: that you want to discuss things, but only if they are unrelentingly positive. of course it isn't personal, but it is relevant.

i've just come back from NYC and most of the americans that i spoke to agreed that america is messed up right now, and they are proud americans, not america bashers!

sansouci · 19/03/2005 14:55

Who in their right mind would support England in cricket? They usually lose.

JoolsToo · 19/03/2005 16:44

not that I'm a cricket fan (I'd rather plait grass) but they've done rather well of recent times! shocking but true!

JJ · 19/03/2005 16:50

I've been able to stay out of this until now, but do have to correct an important point: Cadbury Creme eggs are sold in the US!

Phew, feel much better for sharing that.

JoolsToo · 19/03/2005 16:51
Grin
colinsmommy · 19/03/2005 16:53

Yes they are JJ, but not for a very long period of time! (must go get some now before they are gone)

Ameriscot2005 · 19/03/2005 18:25

Late to the party, but as a former American resident, a few points caught my eye -

Someone said that American culture is often characterised by excessive materialism, and I'd have to agree with that wholeheartedly. Once you pick away at superficial sociability, it's all down to possessions.

Someone said that American citizenship was something to be proud of - I just have to say "barf". How can you be proud of something you have no control over (that's if you are a natural-born American)? I was totally put off any kind of patriotism post 9-11 with the disgusting behaviour I witnessed in the US.

Someone talked about American websites not slagging off British. Erm - news for you, ladies. If you look at websites for American expatriates in the UK, you will find plenty of active threads doing exactly that, including theads specifically about parenting. How backward we are, how anything in the US is better etc. I tried to do my bit for Britain on one of the sites and was banned for having such sensible views.

The one I was banned from

The other (yawn) one

suedonim · 19/03/2005 19:51

Heehee, JJ - ds1 says you're right but Creme Eggs are very hard to source so they're as good as unavailable! Ds2 hopes to go to LA for a conference next month so he's been detailed off to bring more eggs. Ds1 already has 18 which I sent him!

Ameriscot2005 · 19/03/2005 19:54

Creme Eggs are fairly easy to get. The two main national drug stores, Walgreens and CVS, sell them. Sam's Club sells them by the 24-pack...

They are made in the UK, unlike other "Cadbury's" chocolate in the US.

JoolsToo · 19/03/2005 21:00

got this off your site Ameriscot

difference in sayings

"American: Call me sometime
Brit: Give us a ring

American: What in the hell?
Brit: What you on about?

American: How are you?
Brit: You alright?

American: What a hunk! (I always hated that word, btw)
Brit: He's a bit of alright!

American: That's it, I'm suing!
Brit: Ah well, swings and roundabouts

expatinscotland · 19/03/2005 21:09

I've been on the banned one as well. Funny how some of the members slag off the British, yet feel free to take advantage of the generosity of the British taxpayers by falsely claiming benefits in direct violations of the visas that permit them to stay in the UK. How disgusting is that? After seeing that happen a few times, I was too sickened to go there anymore. Many of the forum members demonstrate all the qualities I despise in humanity - smugness, arrogance, greed/money worship, boastfulness/lies, and being manipulative.

JoolsToo · 19/03/2005 21:10

what? they actually talk about doing it on the forum?

expatinscotland · 19/03/2005 21:13

Most definitely, Jools, and not only condone but support those who falsely claim benefits instead of shopping them to the authorities. They also talk about how they masturbate themselves, how they have cybersex w/married men/women, and their ILs personal, intimate secrets. Yet if you have the nerve to speak out you get 'yellow carded' as in a football match or 'banned'. It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

Ameriscot2005 · 19/03/2005 21:14

Oh yes, Jools - very brazen.

JoolsToo · 19/03/2005 21:16

I am truly

we should email a link to Downing Street

have to say a couple of recent threads here have been a bit much!

expatinscotland · 19/03/2005 21:20

Please do, Jools! I'll be happy to join in. There are cheats on there who are on student visas and even got stipends to study here. So not only are they not paying fees, but they're bilking the taxpayers into the bargain! It's commonplace among these students, from what I have read.

And still others who are amazed they can't claim benefit when they are here as 'Highly Skilled Migrants'. Um, doesn't 'highly skilled' imply you've a great enough earning potential not to need assistance from the state?? The fact that that even crossed their minds is disgusting enough! I mean, that's basically going over to someone's house as a guest and taking money out of their purse!

JoolsToo · 19/03/2005 21:24

I am so

This is really serious stuff! (well I think so) I can't believe they talk about it openly.

where do I find a thread - under what title?

expatinscotland · 19/03/2005 21:32

There's one currently in a section you have to pay for. I no longer have access to it, however, as I deleted myself from the board. The other I printed out some time ago.
