I have a lump in my throat
I really believe that in my kids' lifetimes things will change for the better

GULP

the use of Anne Nixon-Cooper to illustrate the changes in america in the last century was genius and so powerful

I so hope for Obama
a) no one shoots him
b) he doesn't get sucked in to the bureaucracy machine and those around him allow him to carry out his strong and honest convictions over the next 4 years.

at Prescott and Ken Clarke, meh!

McCain's speech was good, very dignified. Imo he seemed to have his dignity back after the election & I still think, having seen his speech 85 times on Sky/BBC this morning, that he is relieved not to have won.

Anyone else think the BBC coverage was crap, strangely dull? I don't think I've ever watched any election on Sky before. I wanted a bit of oomph. And I'm not only thinking of Obama

Dimbleby looked & sounded like a PCC member who'd been roped into chairing a meeting because the chair had put his back out again and he'd really rather be at home tending to his bonsai trees and watching Countdown.

Victorysausages4Obama · 05/11/2008 14:20

He is a very very special and precious man indeed

...and shaggable

(sorry, can't help myself)

slackrunner · 05/11/2008 14:24

LOL at victorysausages

too at the winning speech. I'm so very relieved that he won, although I have much respect for John McCain for fighting a good fight, and then losing so graciously.

smugmumofboys · 05/11/2008 14:27

I was listening to it on the radio this morning as I was getting ready and couldn't get my mascara on for ages as my eyes were too wet with tears.

Then it was played again as I was driving to a lesson at lunchtime and off I went again.

skidaddleMcCainHereComesOBAMA · 05/11/2008 15:04

very shaggable I agree and there aren't many US presidents you can say that about...

and yes I blubbed like a baby

ruty · 05/11/2008 15:17

i was a bit disappointed in the speech. Well written yes, but he does lack a bit of charisma and connection IMO. Extremely pleased he won, but do wonder if things will really change.

NorthernLurker · 05/11/2008 15:19

I cried too. Then I was talking to my girls about it as we cycled to school and said that it was very exciting that so many people had voted when previously they thought there was no point in voting and I cried again! And now I've just typed that and I'm welling up....

Pawslikepaddington · 05/11/2008 15:21

Oh my god I'm so glad someone else cried-I felt like such a silly idiot! crying to it-especially the bit about the puppy!

MiaWallace · 05/11/2008 15:47

I can't help but watch him on tv and think of the President in the early seasons of 24.

I keep expecting to see Jack in the background.

DaisyMooSteiner · 05/11/2008 15:57

God, yes, I always felt the world would be a better place if President Palmer were in charge

spokette · 05/11/2008 18:05

Found this piece about Ann Nixon Cooper

UnquietDad · 05/11/2008 18:08

Obviously the best man won.

Maybe next time they will be really radical and elect an openly atheist president.

Nah. Not gonna happen.

slayerette · 05/11/2008 18:20

Thank goodness it wasn't only me who cried. I don't think it was so much the content of the speech, or what he might or might not be able to achieve, or even the fact that George Bush is finally no longer the man in charge but just the sheer symbolic significance of what his election means - that a black man has been elected to the presidency is a phenomenal, amazing moment.

twinsetandpearls · 05/11/2008 18:22

Well apparantly we are all guilty of fake ernestness ( if that is a word).

I ahve actually blubbed every time I saw it and felt very proud of my year 10s who were also moved by this speech and gave him a rather teary round of applause.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/11/2008 18:27

I've been weepy with happiness today too and found myself declaring to people that it was a day to be noted in history. Poor dd is sick of me telling her she will always remember this day - i'm sure she will, it will be the day she remembers as her Mum being a complete loon!

Hopefully I'll stop welling up about it after a good nights sleep!

twinsetandpearls · 05/11/2008 18:28

I am weeping as I read about all of you weeping.

Victorysausages4Obama · 05/11/2008 18:35

Spokette - Lordy she doesn't look a day over 65 does she?

Must be all that community work - keeps you young eh?

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 05/11/2008 18:38

Is anyone else as happy as I am that as well as this being momentous for obvious reasons, he's also a Democrat?!

twinsetandpearls · 05/11/2008 18:40

god yes fatti

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/11/2008 19:38

lol Fatti

we all just sat down and watched the speech properly. dd(8) was spellbound though shes heard bits and pieces of it a few times now. At the end she was quiet with tears in her eyes.
After we lit sparklers and spelt 'hope' and 'victory' and 'change' then dd went all out for lots of BO's lol!!!
gosh we are schmalzy.

Victorysausages4Obama · 05/11/2008 20:40

I will wake up every morning a happier tired Mum from now on!!

A Democrat - yes

A black man in the Whitehouse - YES!!!

Blush
twinsetandpearls · 05/11/2008 22:08

I am now blubbing to the news at ten, it is not just about his colour but about the fact the future looks positive. I cried when labour won here.
