I have a lump in my throat
I really believe that in my kids' lifetimes things will change for the better

GULP

the use of Anne Nixon-Cooper to illustrate the changes in america in the last century was genius and so powerful

I so hope for Obama
a) no one shoots him
b) he doesn't get sucked in to the bureaucracy machine and those around him allow him to carry out his strong and honest convictions over the next 4 years.

Actually, I think we're going a bit faster than handcart speed...

Hathor · 05/11/2008 11:56

... rocket?

Callisto · 05/11/2008 11:58

about that, yes.

MrsThierryHenry · 05/11/2008 12:04

Haven't yet heard the speeches but I will listen to them. Have also bought Obama's biography to listen to. So I am fiercely pro Obama, BUT please don't forget that he is a politician, just like Tony Blair (remember how optimistic we were in 1997?) and just like bloody Margaret Thatcher. The brightest and the best DO become corrupted once they get into power, it's a sad fact of our lives.

If I were Obama's mother I would be over the moon and beside myself with joy this morning at his extraordinary achievement, but I would also be thinking 'Shit, he's gone into politics. Why couldn't he have become a doctor instead, and really help people?'

Sorry to rain on the party, I think Obama's fab but I can virtually guarantee that in a few years' time (especially with the current economic meltdown which he's inheriting) we'll be speaking about him quite differently.

For now, though, I'll still raise a glass of bubbly .

finknottle · 05/11/2008 12:06

I don't think I'll change my mind about his voice though.... drool.
Have never been smitten by a politician before - is it sleep deprivation?

twitcher · 05/11/2008 12:06

not sure if I was moved by speech, think it could have been seeing Jesse Jackson blubbing (do you think he still wants to cut Obama's nuts off ...?)

fembear · 05/11/2008 12:08

That's a great piece of oration, Mrs TH.
Have you thought of going into politics?

MrsThierryHenry · 05/11/2008 12:10

Jesse Jackson was probably blubbing out of envy - he knows he could never give such an articulate speech himself! Did you hear him at the 'Stop the War' march in London in 2003? Came on stage, shouted 'Stop the war! Save the children!' about 5 times, then walked off. I kid you not.

Finky - so glad you said that...there is something strangely alluring, isn't there?

MrsThierryHenry · 05/11/2008 12:13

Fembear - cheeeeeeky!

Anyone know where I can hear the speech?

JackieNo · 05/11/2008 12:20

BBC website MrsTH.

Madsometimes · 05/11/2008 12:24

I've been crying most of this morning too
I wish him all the best, he has inherited an incredibly difficult job.

bozza · 05/11/2008 12:25

msn home page has a link. Not tried it because I am at work.

MrsThierryHenry · 05/11/2008 12:26

Cheers JackieNo. Funnily enough with all this euphoria and talk of Obama's attractiveness I am reminded of Kennedy...am I the only one who sees this? Let's hope that's the only level of similarity.

BlueCowWonders · 05/11/2008 12:29

Great speech, had me almost in tears.

Pity some of it was borrowed from Bob the Builder methinks (yes we can).

mellabella · 05/11/2008 12:33

the speech was amazing. I'm an american living over here and i had goosebumps and tears and just ahhh it was so good! totally worth staying up all night with a 2 month old and not getting any sleep

JackieNo · 05/11/2008 12:39

I was just in the office reading the transcript of it, not even seeing/listening to him do it, and it made me all (surreptitiously) teary.

MrsThierryHenry · 05/11/2008 12:45

PMSL at Bob the Builder! Also Martine McCutcheon - 'this is our moment'!

Is this where he seeks his inspiration?!

Am listning to him right now. Great speech indeed.

Oh God, now they're all chanting 'yes we can'!

I did indeed blub an awful lot. I actually started blubbing when I found out he'd won and didn't stop till I'd had two cups of coffee and sent him a congratulatory email!

Mind you part of that's probably fatigue. DH just keeps muttering 'bloody hormonal women' and walking out the room when I start to gush.

My faith in Americans being able to make a sensible decision has been reborn.

Now then, about my campaign to get Simon Cowell as UK prime minister.....

noonki · 05/11/2008 12:56

MissThiery _ I saw Jesse do that 'speech' as well.

I even blubbed at McCains defeat speech, not sure why even, just such an emotional day

I can't think about the fact that a black man is President without blubbing again considering the inequities still in US and rest of world. Can't believe they did it, I daren't hope, thought that they would never vote in a black face in the White house.

finknottle · 05/11/2008 13:24

Mrs TH - not 'strangely alluring', 'strongly alluring'
I never got the 'Wow' Obama thing before but having seen and heard him today - wow! I knew he was skilled as an orator but soundbites don't do him justice on that front or on the charisma front. And then there are his hands...

And me a hard-boiled political cynic...I've wasted so much time on his policies too

The world's first shaggable politician black US president

MrsThierryHenry · 05/11/2008 13:29

PMSL re bread & fishes!

Noonki - had you heard JJ speak before? I hadn't and we were SOOOOOO excited before he came on stage, then SOOOOOO disappointed when he opened his mouth!

Finknottle - hahahahahahha! But seriously, did you not think Prescott was the world's first shaggable politician? Chipolata or not?

JackieNo · 05/11/2008 13:37

Oh no - that was 'Sexy Ken' Clarke, back in the 80s, imo .

DaisyMooSteiner · 05/11/2008 13:42

Haven't heard Obama's speech yet, but just blubbed at McCain's speech in particular the bit about Obama's grandmother I desperately wanted Obama to win but McCain's speech was very gracious and moving.

noonki · 05/11/2008 13:52

thiery - I know we had spend 9 hours on a train to get there and just made it in time and then .... oh was that it

Daisy - gld I wasn't the only one!
