I have a lump in my throat
I really believe that in my kids' lifetimes things will change for the better

GULP

the use of Anne Nixon-Cooper to illustrate the changes in america in the last century was genius and so powerful

I so hope for Obama
a) no one shoots him
b) he doesn't get sucked in to the bureaucracy machine and those around him allow him to carry out his strong and honest convictions over the next 4 years.

wasn't it an amazing speech.

Yes the use of Anne Nixon-Cooper was fantastic. I think a stark reminder to those that forget that not so many years ago he wouldn't even have been able to vote, let alone be elected as the President.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 05/11/2008 05:27

I agree suzy.

It's all very exciting and hopeful. He is smashing.

I was blubbing the moment the news broke. I am extremely hopeful that mine and my boys' lives are just about to improve. And CF you are great, a truly gracious and very clever political speech from McCain.

AbbaFan · 05/11/2008 06:52

I am excited, happy, overwhemled, and crying ALOT!!!

Yay, the best man won

finknottle · 05/11/2008 06:57

What an orator - haven't really heard more than bits of his speeches apart from the convention one. He is something else

McCain was v good imo, I thought he seemed relieved that it was all over - he's looked v frazzled the last few days.

AbbaFan · 05/11/2008 06:58

Where can I see the whole speech?

finknottle · 05/11/2008 07:02

here

drowninginlaundry · 05/11/2008 07:03

I can't listen to his speeches without welling up

so pleased for the american people, I truly think it's the start of something better

what a tough job the new administration will have though, picking through the wreckage left behind by that bunch of lying, corrupt, ignorant nutjobs.

Shoshe · 05/11/2008 07:04

God i wish i had watched that before putting on my make up!

Callisto · 05/11/2008 10:00

It made me cry too - it is an amazingly hopeful day for the whole world and I think that the world has just become a safer and better place for all of us.

PenelopePitstops · 05/11/2008 11:00

absolutely fabulous speech, listening to it now i am blubbing!

its such an amazing day today

MadameCastafiore · 05/11/2008 11:02

FFS - mass dillusion sweeping the world this morning!

Callisto - he apparently wants to bomb Pakistan! Why do you think that will make the world safer - even having a middle name like Hussain isn't going to keep the radicals at bay!

JackieNo · 05/11/2008 11:04

THe quote that says that people have been led to 'put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day' is incredibly inspiring (even to someone as jaded as me).

donnie · 05/11/2008 11:07

yes I agree suzywong - I just watched the entire speech on bbc.co.uk and it is quite something. The reference to Anne Nixon-Cooper was a masterstroke IMO.

Madamcastafiore - where is your evidence for that allegation? I have not heard about that. He HAS said he is willing to engage in talks with Iran which in my book indicates progress and compromise.

I wait with baited breath to see if he will do anything for the Palestinians. Let's face it, they have been fucked over by Bush big time.

Callisto · 05/11/2008 11:11

He 'apparently' wants to bomb Pakistan? Can you at least back this allegation up or tell us where you heard it?

morningpaper · 05/11/2008 11:11

It was very well written but I don't find him quite as CHARISMATIC as I would like

Nick Clegg was rather handsome moving at the LibDem conference I note

NotSoRampantRabbit · 05/11/2008 11:12

I listened to it on Radio 4 whilst driving DS to nursery.

I thought it was an incredible speech and I cried.

I said to DH this morning that I feel more hopeful for our children's future.

Regardless of what happens next, America has shown us what it represents. And I like it.

JackieNo · 05/11/2008 11:13

Some information on Pakistan here (scroll down, or click).

francagoestohollywood · 05/11/2008 11:14

I think it is a great acceptance speech.
I'm not sure if/how/how many etc things will "change", but I'm very happy that he won the elections

goblinvalley · 05/11/2008 11:15

This is one article that talks about his views on Pakistan and that he would strike with or without their governments agreement

"here www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSN0132206420070801"

donnie · 05/11/2008 11:19

thanks for that link goblinvalley - those comments were made while Musharref was still in power I see.

Callisto · 05/11/2008 11:20

Hmm, a speech from August after being accused of being 'soft'. I shall wait and see how he feels about the Middle East post credit-crunch and becoming president. It will be more accurate I think.

Hathor · 05/11/2008 11:26

Well I blubbed at both Barack's speech and McCains. Those Americans really know how to pile on the emotion.
Of course, Barack's rallying cry is old rhetoric
The world is hoping he can fix it - starting with global warming, the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, poverty. I truly think we are going to hell in a handcart unless this man does something brave and bold.
As someone on the radio said this morning, at least he has a passport, and that is a good start.

Callisto · 05/11/2008 11:53

"I truly think we are going to hell in a handcart unless this man does something brave and bold."

My thoughts entirely Hathor.
