Oh yes, not actually meaning to argue that the article is actually correct, just pointing out what it states.

filz · 28/10/2008 15:44

the herpes virus is dangerous to anyone vulnerable
surely people KNOW this?

filz · 28/10/2008 15:45

I am very sorry to the family too, its horrendous

onager · 28/10/2008 15:47

But it's terrible to speak of her killing her child. It says "carried by 85% of the population" which means she would have been exposed to it anyway one way or another.

85% of people are carriers of herpes but only a small percentage of people have active herpes virus at any one time

Isnt it the old wives tale of not kissing on the lips etc. i think we have gone backwards in some ways rather than forwards. People seem to think its 'nothing' these days

the poor baby, mum andf dad though. She should have been much better advised and I am sure its vvvvv unusual, so she is no way to blame at all and shouldnt blame herself

Upwind · 28/10/2008 15:54

carried by 85% of the population may be true, but if you've not had a coldsore in years you are hardly spreading it?

Does this mean that visitors with coldsores should be kept away from maternity units? And new mothers with active coldsores quarantined? What scared me about the article was not just that the staff seemed unaware of the risks of it being her first ever coldsore, but also they don't seem to have taken any precautions regarding either her baby or others'.

Pinkchampagne · 28/10/2008 15:57

how tragic - poor parents. She was a beautiful baby.

filz · 28/10/2008 15:59

it worries me that general nursing staff dont seem to know of the risks

I only know because my sister had a double transplant and my best friend had luekemia and unluckily, v v unluckily died because the herpes virus reactivated when she was so immuno suppressed

Upwind · 28/10/2008 16:03

I would not have thought twice about visiting a close relative with a new baby if I had a coldsore. I would not have kissed the baby obviously, but I would have gone in to the maternity unit.

Ironically, pregnancy seems to have reactivated my long-dormant coldsores. There is every chance I will have one when I give birth, hence my posts on this thread about hygiene and preventing the virus from spreading.

She was an utterly gorgeous baby

God that is such a sad and scary story. I had cold sores almost constantly from birth until DD was about 5 months old, in the end my GP put me on anti-virals to try and give me a break from them.

I had NO clue how dangerous it could be. I am astounded that there isn't more widely publicised information about this. I am a little neurotic about cold sores and go over the top in trying not to pass on to anyone but I had several secondary viral infections in my saliva glands as a result of the initial cold sore.

LouMacca · 28/10/2008 18:01

I thought you would be interested to know that the Mum of Mira is on This Morning tomorrow. I think we will all have tissues to hand.

Rose100 · 29/10/2008 10:09

This is heartbreaking.

GooseyLoosey · 29/10/2008 10:15

Gosh - had no idea they were so dangerous. That poor family. Dh gets them and we have always kept the dcs from touching them, but never thought when they were tiny that anything more was required.

jellybeans · 29/10/2008 12:26

So sad, Mira's family are so brave for raising awareness. My mum, nan and MIL have them (cold sores) and MIL always kisses DD on the lips and I now think DD may have caught it! I am due in 2 weeks and terrified that MIL will kiss the baby. Do I not let anyone kiss baby? Can they pass it on if they have no active sores? I have lectured all my kids about not kissing on the lips any relative.

nellynaemates · 29/10/2008 19:37

I feel absolutely terrible for that poor women.

I get coldsores myself and my baby was born almost exactly the same time as hers (11 months ago).

He was poorly anyway after he was born for a few days but the thought...

BabyBaby123 · 29/10/2008 20:46

omg, such a beautiful baby. How heartbreaking for them, knowing it could have been prevented.....

asdmumandteacher · 29/10/2008 20:48

So so sad. Poor family. What a beautiful baby

Hulababy · 29/10/2008 20:52

How tragically sad The poor family.

I had no idea a cold sore could be so devastating.

CarGirl · 29/10/2008 20:55

My dd had Strep A over her genitalia for the best part of a year, endless trips to the drs they kept saying it was thrush even though it didn't respond to anti fungal creams, and skin peeing off her anus and blood streaked stools. Fortunately by the time she had chicken pox she had finally been tested and was on strong 3 week course of anitbiotics. Strep A if it enters the blood stream is often fatal and this is likely through open sores such as chicken pox.

Like Herpes being fatal so can Strep A and there is so little knowledge of them.

anyone who has a child with recurrent nappy rash please ensure that you ask your child to have a swab taken.

That poor family I hope their tragedy raises the profile & prevents many more deaths. My Mum had coldsores and would never hug & kiss us when she had them, I am very grateful for that now!

colacubes · 29/10/2008 20:56

Tragic, RIP little one x

singyswife · 29/10/2008 21:00

I get coldsore a lot and I am sure I had them when my kids were little. God I wish I had known that before. If I ever have another baby I will certainly watch what I am doing. That poor family. How awful for them.
