but i am such a cynic atm, that i am not surprised. people are completley and utterely vile.

So sad for the lad's family, and the police officers who were trying to help him; they'll never truely know how much the shouting contributed to his final decision.

However, it is not surprising - think about the films nowadays - all horror and gore and terrible things. What about video games? beat em slash em kill em.

I don't know whether such things are getting more violent and gruesome because we are, or whether we are getting more violent and gruesome because we are being desensitised by these things - iyswim. Kind of chicken-egg situation.

But as a society, we are becoming more and more unshockable and we are used to seeing horrible things, and they don't seem to bother many people any more. Many people have no compassion for others and no interest in anything but themselves.

Imagine the 1940s, showing one of these new horror films with the level of blood and horror - they'd have to take people off in ambulances! Now we want more and more killing and suffering to entertain us. Films and games aren't enough, some want rl horror to get off on.

I was thinking on similar line just the other day about male full frontal nudity in mainstream telly, it doesn't seem that long ago that it would have been unthinkable, then I watched last week's episode of The Wrong Door (weird comendy show) and it had a whole bunch of naked men!!
It seems like that sex & violence isn'ty as big a deal as it used to be.

Still feel so sad for his family. Did not one of that crowd not think how they would feel if it was their brother or son or best friend that jumped?

ive been r eading 'world without end' by ken follet, set in the fourteenth century. life there is comletly horrendous. assuming the author has it correct. they certainly didnt need the gore andhorror we have. they had enoughof it in rl.
i think the same in the forties. there was a war on. people knew all about blood and horror. they didnt need to see it in films, as it was around them. nowadays, we have sanitised our daily lives os muc, we need the film fix to satisfy such basic, animal urges.

That's exactly what I was going to post, stitch. My Grandad can't understand why people want to watch war films - even ones made in the 40s and 50s - because he was in it, and saw it first hand.

I think reality TV and the sleb culture has got a lot to answer for as well. We're encouraged to sit back and zap between Oprah, Jerry Springer, Big Brother, X Factor - people's lives, hopes, dreams, fuck-ups, all there for our entertainment. We're encouraged to judge them, cheer them, boo them like they're pantomime villains. As we are with slebs, who actually are real people, although we often forget it (and I expect they do too).

I suppose this was simply a form of reality TV live for some of that crowd.

Yes they did. I agree that it's probably not that new. Morons have always been a majority of the population, it seems.

It is horrible, but not new. I remember my father telling me about seeing the exact same thing happening when he was living in New York in the 1950s.
